The offer coincides with Disability Awareness Month, which was created by the non-profit organization Life Happens. Industry members across the United States such as Polk recognize the proclamation, and use it as a time to raise awareness about the possibility of disability, as well as the often-overlooked need for disability insurance and wise income protection planning.

Who needs disability insurance?

Anyone who works has a need for disability insurance. According to a Life Happens survey, nearly half of Americans wouldn't make it more than month without a paycheck before financial difficulties began to arise.

Many workers wrongly assume that their employer or the state covers them, but many states offer no disability coverage, and the ones that do only offer it short term. Often it is also very difficult to qualify for disabled status, and recipients often need to be out of work for a year already in order to apply.

Workman's comp also offered only to people who have been injured on the job. According to a study done by the Council for Disability Awareness, nine out of ten disabilities are caused not by accidents but by illness.
