Homes with a Pool in These Cities Have Higher Asking Prices than Homes Without

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Summer is officially here and to celebrate Redfin (www.redfin.com), the next-generation real estate brokerage, released a list of the 10 best cities to throw a backyard pool party. To put together the list, Redfin data scientists analyzed the listing descriptions of all the homes that have hit the market in the last year and found the cities with the highest percentage of listings that mentioned the word “pool.” Palm Springs, Calif. came in at number one on the list. Redfin also found that homes with a pool in these cities had a higher median asking price than homes without. For example, the median asking price for a home with a pool in Palm Springs is $569,000. That's $26,000 more than the median asking price of all homes in the city.

A backyard pool may increase the value of a home in one of these top 10 cities, but in other areas of the country, installing a pool might not be worth it. “Between daily heating and filtering, weekly cleaning and yearly inspections, keeping up a pool costs time and money,” said MaryDell Penney, a Redfin real estate agent in Orlando, Florida. “Homeowners insurance is also likely to be higher for a home with a pool. In warm climates a pool can add value to a home, but in colder areas it can turn off some buyers.”

Here are the top 10 cities to throw a pool party according to the analysis:

1. Palm Springs, California2. La Quinta, California3. Windermere, Florida4. Davenport, Florida5. Bonita Springs, Florida6. Palm Harbor, Florida7. Naples, Florida8. Scottsdale, Arizona9. Boca Raton, Florida10. Cape Coral, Florida
