Reactor Core Announces New Method for Standardizing Coding School Student Outcomes

Other Coding Schools Encouraged to Adopt Innovative Standard Student Outcome Methodology (SSOM) for Calculating School Outcomes, Creating Transparency

May 3, 2016 7:47 PM EDT

SAN FRANCISCO, May 3, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Reactor Core, the leader in technology education, today announced the development of their Standard Student Outcome Methodology (SSOM), which allows coding bootcamps to report student outcomes in a standardized and verifiable manner.

The organization is calling on all schools in the coding market to apply the methodology in order to create greater transparency for students.

As a fairly new form of higher education, coding schools are unique in that they are without an industry-wide standard to report student outcomes and salary data. With no guidelines, different coding schools have adopted varying formulas and rely on inconsistent factors to calculate these results. This means that while these organizations can share data, students are often unaware of what these numbers actually represent, how they were calculated and what they truly measure. Further, this lack of transparency prevents students from choosing the coding school that best fits their individual needs and career goals.

"We strongly believe that prospective students of short-term computer science schools need transparency similar to that of traditional educational institutions," said Ruan Pethiyagoda, Reactor Core's Chief Strategy Officer. "Students need a way to better understand the relationship between a chosen school and their potential return on investment, and SSOM will allow them to make informed decisions about their education."

Reactor Core's team of innovators has designed SSOM as a means through which coding schools can establish an industry standard. By both identifying what combination and formulation of data is most important to students while ensuring that the same definitions and measurements are applied across the industry's outcomes reporting, SSOM will provide transparency in this growing marketplace. Standardized formulas to determine attrition, placement and exemption will allow coding bootcamps to ensure accurate outcomes data that will in turn foster a mutual trust between coding schools and the students they serve.

"Students want to know what these outcomes numbers really mean for them, and we believe that SSOM is the best way to let students know what they can expect," added Pethiyagoda. "With an industry adoption of this standard, we can collectively better serve our students and assist them in making important decisions about their future."

The SSOM was designed to have an easy onboarding path so that schools can adopt it retroactively, regardless of the state of the school's prior documentation standards. Reactor Core has applied the SSOM to its student outcomes data for Hack Reactor and is in the process of doing the same with its entire network of schools. The organization is committed to the process and will have applied the SSOM to its entire network by 2017.
