Qiku's Dazen Phones: Popular in the Indian Market

June 25, 2015 10:41 AM EDT

BEIJING, June 25, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Earlier this month a promotional event finished on Snapdeal, the largest e-commerce platform in India. Dazen, a Chinese smartphone brand owned by Qiku, was crowned the champion of smartphone sales, followed by Nokia, iPhone and Samsung.

Currently, the USA and Japan lead in key mobile phone technologies. However, Chinese brands have become increasingly popular with Indian customers.

As the second most populous country in the world, India has seen a sharp increase of smartphone users, with over 900 million registered phone users. Yet, only 110-120 million of them have smartphones. As of June 2015, India's smartphone penetration rate is only around 10%.

However, the Indian Internet and mobile Internet have become a new hot market in global innovation-dominated economic ecology.  Data shows that India is the third largest smartphone market in the world after China and the USA. The number of smartphone users has already reached the upper limits in China but the number of users in India is still relatively low and smartphone shipments to India is increasing by 20% per year. So, Chinese smartphone manufacturers like Qiku have flooded into India. For global investors, India represents the huge potential that China had as a smartphone market five years ago.

Qiku joined the battle first by announcing that it would significantly drop the price of its Dazen phones in China (only $65 US dollars). After this approach worked well in the Chinese market, Qiku then entered the Indian market. With a mix of cheap and premium smartphones and a strong distribution network, it quickly become the dominant player in India, and holds the biggest share of the Indian smartphone market.

This is just the beginning. Many Chinese smartphone manufacturers, such as ZTE and Huawei, also have their eyes on the Indian market.

According to some analysts from the Japanese phone market, Japan is exporting a large amount of expensive and high-quality mobile phone parts to China, which implies that Chinese clients are taking quality as their priority. The focus of Chinese mobile phone industry is transferring from traditional manufacturing to quality and brand-building. This trend deserves the attention of well-known mobile phone manufacturers around the world.
