Chicago, IL (PRWEB) June 23, 2015

Miller Canfield announces that public finance veteran Maribel Mata Benedict has joined the firm as a principal in Chicago. She brings 15 years of experience serving as counsel in a variety of roles in financing transactions including bond counsel, underwriter and borrower counsel. Her public finance practice also includes tax and arbitrage rebate matters for city, county and state issuers.

"We're delighted to have Maribel join our expanding team in Chicago," said Michael McGee, CEO of Miller Canfield. "She is one of the nation's leading lawyers focusing on tax-exempt and taxable financings for governments. Adding a lawyer of Maribel's caliber to our outstanding public finance team is very gratifying."

Mata Benedict is president of Women in Public Finance, a national professional organization for women in the public finance industry. She was appointed to the steering committee (2014-2016) of the National Association of Bond Lawyers (NABL) to chair the panels on "Public Private Partnerships" at its annual Bond Attorney Workshop. She is the author of "Public Private Partnerships-A Primer," published in the NABL's Blue Book.

She began her practice in public finance as a sole practitioner in a Latina-owned law firm she established in 1994 in Chicago. She received her J.D. from Loyola University School of Law (1991) and her B.A. in Political Science, Philosophy and Classical Civilization from Loyola University of Chicago (1986).

Mata Benedict is active in civic and community affairs. She serves on the boards of the Logan Square Neighborhood Association and Providence St. Mel School in Chicago and has volunteered with the Chicago Children's Advocacy Center as its pro bono counsel. She is also a member of the Chicago United leadership council.

The addition of Mata Benedict to Miller Canfield's Chicago office follows on the heels of the firm adding 10 lawyers from the law firm of Kubasiak Fylstra Thorpe & Rotunno, as well as environmental principal Lawrence Falbe, higher education senior attorney LaKeisha Marsh, labor and employment principal Amy Zdravecky, and real estate principal Joseph Huntzicker.

Miller Canfield's public finance team served as the City of Detroit's bankruptcy bond counsel. In December, the firm closed four transactions totaling $1.28 billion to fund revitalization efforts and creditor settlements, marking the city's emergence from bankruptcy and the conclusion of the largest, most complex municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. The firm's public finance practice includes lawyers in Illinois and Michigan specializing in capital projects and infrastructure improvements, capital restructuring and cash flow borrowings, economic development projects, municipal securities representations, environmental response projects, government and regulatory affairs, hospitals, housing, and local, state and federal tax.
