Prime Healthcare Hospitals Receive National Recognition for Award-Winning Care

August 24, 2016 5:29 PM EDT

ONTARIO, Calif., Aug. 24, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Centinela Hospital Medical Center, Sherman Oaks Hospital and Chino Valley Medical Center have been named among the 100 Great Community Hospitals in the nation by Becker's Hospital Review, the latest in a host of honors recognizing the award-winning care at Prime Healthcare hospitals.

Prime Healthcare, based in Ontario, CA, is the fifth largest health system in the nation. Prime Healthcare includes 43 hospitals in 14 states and employs nearly 43,000 people.

"Unlike any other health system, Prime Healthcare is physician-driven and physician-led with a passionate dedication to quality and patient experience using evidence-based practices. We are honored to be recognized for the quality of our clinical care by Becker's and numerous other organizations," said Prem Reddy, MD, FACC, FCCP, Chairman, President and CEO of Prime Healthcare. "Public reporting of health care value and quality encourages improvement in healthcare while at the same time provides consumers information to help them make informed decisions about their care."

Becker's defines a "community hospital" as one with fewer than 550 beds that has minimal teaching programs. The Becker's editorial team selected the top community hospitals based on rankings and awards from such organizations as iVantage Health Analytics, Truven Health Analytics, Healthgrades, CareChex, the American Nurses Credentialing Center and the Leapfrog Group.

"We are very proud of this recognition that sheds light on how we value our communities and on our goal of becoming a high reliability organization committed to consistent, quality care," said Sunny Bhatia, MD, Chief Medical Officer for Prime Healthcare's California and Nevada hospitals. "I'd like to acknowledge and thank our employees and physicians who are dedicated to delivering the best possible clinical care to all patients."

Dr. Bhatia also serves as Chief Medical Officer of Sherman Oaks Hospital. The hospital earned "100 Top Hospital" recognition for the first time this year from Truven Health Analytics for its quality care. Chino Valley Medical Center and Centinela Hospital Medical Center also received "100 Top Hospital" recognition, each for the fifth time.

Centinela Hospital in Inglewood was in dire straits and in danger of closing in 2007 when Prime Healthcare agreed to acquire it. Centinela has since become a thriving community asset and is currently undergoing an $80 million renovation.

"Prime was the only organization willing to take a chance on one of our area's last remaining safety net hospitals," said James T. Butts Jr., Mayor of Inglewood. "Today, Centinela Hospital flourishes, seeing 65,000 patients a year, many of them on Medi-Cal or without insurance. Thanks to Prime, Centinela Hospital continues to be a centerpiece of our community and a key component in the rebirth of Inglewood."

In addition to multiple other quality awards, Centinela Hospital earned a four-star rating in the new government "Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings" and has received multiple clinical excellence and safety awards from Healthgrades.

Additionally, U.S. News & World Report recognized multiple Prime Healthcare hospitals as among the "Best Hospitals" in their respective states, and high performing in at least one specialty/condition. Prime's honored California hospitals include Centinela Hospital Medical Center; Sherman Oaks Hospital in Sherman Oaks; Paradise Valley Hospital in National City; Shasta Regional Medical Center in Redding; Desert Valley Hospital in Victorville, and West Anaheim Medical Center in Anaheim.

Prime Healthcare hospitals outside California that received "Best Hospital" recognition from U.S. News include Landmark Medical Center in Woonsocket, RI; St. Clare's Hospital in Denville, NJ; St. Michael's Medical Center in Newark, NJ; Garden City Hospital in Garden City, MI; St. Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City, MO; Providence Medical Center in Kansas City, KS; Harlingen Medical Center in Harlingen, TX; Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco, TX; and St. Mary's Regional Medical Center in Reno, NV.

In selecting the Best Hospitals, U.S. News analyzed patient survival rates, number of patients, infections, adequacy of nurse staffing and other objective measures. "We strive to provide patients with the highest-quality information on hospitals available," said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis at U.S. News. "Driving for broader transparency and evaluating hospitals in a comprehensive, fair way reflects that mission."

Prime Healthcare stands apart from other health systems in its unique ability to save and transform financially ailing hospitals. The business model emphasizes a physician-led, flat management structure; significant capital investments to acquire cutting-edge medical technology ($1.1 billion since 2005); the benefits of economy of scale; operational efficiency and the use of proven evidence-based, best-practice clinical protocols to ensure the highest standards of quality.
