Planning Institute of BC: Conference Marks 50 Years of Planning for Success
VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - July 19, 2008) - The Planning Institute of British Columbia (PIBC) marked a half century since its founding with a frank discussion of the number one issue facing us today.
A major focus of the PIBC's 2008 Conference and Annual General Meeting in Prince George was a day-long workshop on climate change.
"Climate change will have profound impacts on the way we interact with each other and our environment," said PIBC President Hazel Christy. "As professionals specializing in land use planning, environmental resource management, land development, and other areas, we have a lead role to play in shaping the future livability of our communities."
The workshop brought together experts in a variety of fields and delegates to discuss climate change and its effects on planning in a city environment. They evaluated Prince George's climate change adaptation model and produced a new model to the City for implementation that addresses current issues.
Another highlight of the week was the keynote presentation by Stephen Lewis, former Special Envoy to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Lewis electrified an audience of over 700 (including hundreds of Prince George residents) with a provocative and engaging look at climate change from a global perspective.
"With the success of this years' conference behind us we are excited to be planning for next year with the 2009 BC Land Summit, which will take place in Whistler, BC May 20-22, and which is a joint initiative of six professional associations, including the PIBC," said Christy.
The Planning Institute of BC is an association of BC and Yukon professional planners. Members work in a variety of fields, including land use planning, environmental resource management, land development, heritage conservation, social planning, transportation planning and economic development.
