ONOS(R) and CORD(TM) Mini Summit Co-Located at OPNFV Summit

Fast-Growing Project to Advance Open Source Software Defined Networking Unites in Berlin

June 17, 2016 11:15 AM EDT

BERLIN, GERMANY -- (Marketwired) -- 06/17/16 -- (OPNFV Summit)

What: The ONOS Project today announces a two-part ONOS and CORD Mini Summit and demo exhibition hosted onsite OPNFV Summit. The morning will feature talks around ONOS and the open source community, application development, enhancements and deployments. The afternoon will focus on the architecture of the open reference implementation of CORD (Central Office Re-architected as a Datacenter), built from commodity servers, white-box switches, as well as how open source software defines a general and extensible platform that supports a variety of domains and business units. Two informal coffee breaks planned throughout the day offer attendees the opportunity to chat one-on-one with ONOS and CORD community members to learn more about how to get involved with the rapidly growing and diversifying community. The ONOS Project is a Silver Sponsor of OPNFV Summit.

Who: ONOS Project is an open source member-driven project advancing networks by developing and maintaining a Software-Defined Networking (SDN) OS with scale, high availability, performance, and the right abstractions developers need to create compelling SDN and NFV solutions for Service Providers. CORD is the open source systems platform launched by the ONOS community for Service Providers that combines Network Function Virtualization (NFV), SDN, and the elasticity of commodity clouds to bring datacenter economics and cloud agility to the Telco Central Office.

Topics Covered:

  • ONOS architecture overview
  • ONOS for NFV
  • Network orchestration for multi-layer IP/Optical networks
  • ONOS for Hierarchical IP-Optical Control
  • A Generalized Virtualization Model for Emerging SDN Based Network Services
  • ONOS Deployments and Community Building
  • ONOS Application Tutorial
  • YANG model support in ONOS
  • Central Office Re-architected as a Datacenter and its use-cases
  • China Unicom's View of E-CORD Project
  • A-CORD - An Analytics and Monitoring Framework
  • Why does M-CORD need SmartNICs?-TCO, Analytics and Fabric Integration explained
  • M-CORD - applying CORD and revolutionary mobile technologies advancing towards 5G infrastructure
  • An overview of the open source NFV framework implemented in the context of the Open Baton project

Community Support:
"Ciena has long been an advocate for open, programmable networks, and our support of events like OPNFV's ONOS + CORD Mini Summit demonstrates our commitment to open source technology. As a leading contributor of the CORD use case, Ciena's Blue Planet ONOS, the first commercial ONOS distribution, plays an important role in the industry's shift to software-based network architectures. As an open, vendor-agnostic platform that streamlines the integration of different SDN, NFV, and cloud components, Blue Planet is uniquely positioned to help network operators who are investigating CORD automate services from end-to-end," said Mike Hatfield, Ciena's Senior VP and General Manager, Blue Planet.

"At Fujitsu, we believe the future of networking will be SDN and the core technology will be open source software," said Hisayuki Sekine, head of the network solutions business unit at Fujitsu. "Through collaboration with the ONOS/CORD community, we expect acceleration of innovation for the next generation network."

"We are pleased to see the Mini Summit being held in Berlin. Huawei will continue to support and contribute to the ONOS community," said Bill Ren, Huawei's fixed network vice president and general manager of Open Source. "European operators are important innovation partners in the SDN and NFV fields. We look forward to this event and a series of similar events in the future to allow European operators to gain more understanding of ONOS, and contribute to the community together with other partners in Europe."

"The IEEE SDN initiative is committed to accelerating the implementation and interoperability of software-defined networks. We applaud the work of OPNFV and the Linux Foundation in support of this goal," said Eileen Healy, IEEE SDN co-chair. "To that end, IEEE is collaborating on a proof of concept with the open source community investigating mobile CORD and our ability to create a Virtual Lab environment."
