With One Dip, Pen-X Stops Spread of Viruses and Bacteria Feb 9, 2012 08:15AM

OLDSMAR, Fla., Feb. 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- How many hands touch the pens at the doctor's office, the bank, the teacher's desk each day? And how many viruses -- colds or flu -- and bacteria like MRSA are on those pens? It's enough to make anyone start wearing gloves full-time. Fortunately, that's not necessary, thanks to Pen-X (http://www.pen-x.com), the first writing instrument sanitizer.

Pen-X was created by Tami Rodriguez, a healthcare worker, and her husband Joe. Tami Rodriguez had noticed that healthcare workers rarely sterilized any writing instruments, and together the Rodriguezes began researching the types and amounts of germs found on pens in hospitals and other medical office settings. Their suspicions were correct: Most pens studied had been shown to have multiple colonies of bacteria, and all were considered fomites, or inanimate objects capable of transmitting germs or viruses between people.

"We all know the writing pen can be one of the biggest sources of transmission regarding the spread of infection," stated Joe Rodriguez. "Studies have shown that pens from healthcare workers have tested positive for viruses and bacteria, including influenza, VRE and MRSA. Studies have also shown that wiping down these pens with an alcohol-based cleaning agent significantly stopped the growth and spread of these germs."

Reasoning that few people will take the time to wipe down a pen with alcohol, the Rodriguezes knew they had to provide a way to stop the spread of infectious disease via writing utensils that people would actually use. They hit upon a quick and inexpensive solution to the problem: Pen-X. Available in a sturdy, no-tip tabletop bottle, Pen-X is easy to use. Simply dip the pen into the Pen-X cleaning and sanitizing solution, and that's it. The solution dries in seconds without interfering with the pen's effectiveness, yet it kills 99.9% of germs.

Though Pen-X was developed to address a problem within the healthcare setting, it can be used in any environment in which multiple people touch the same pens each day: schools, offices, social services settings, police stations, grocery stores, and virtually anywhere else.

"Hand washing is considered the number-one way to stop the spread of colds, flu and other contagious illnesses," said Tami Rodriguez. "But that's only effective until we touch the next contaminated pen. Many people practice frequent hand washing yet still contract infectious disease. Pen-X helps put a stop to that by killing the germs that have, until now, been transmitted by writing instruments."

For a limited time, every Pen-X order comes with a free wall mount. To learn more, or to order Pen-X, visit http://www.pen-x.com.

Global Study Reveals Average Annual Revenue from Professional Coaching Feb 9, 2012 08:15AM

LEXINGTON, Ky., Feb. 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Research just released from the 2012 ICF Global Coaching Study shows the global average annual revenue that is generated by professionals providing coaching services to be approximately $47,900 (USD). This figure represents income generated solely from coaching or from providing coaching services.

Results also showed that almost all coaches offer services in addition to coaching. On average, coaches offer almost three (2.7), most commonly consulting (62%) and training (60%). It is also important to note that according to the results from the 2007 Global Coaching Study, over half of all respondents stated that they have offered some of their coaching services pro-bono.

"Having a clear picture of who is coaching, how much they  are coaching and what revenue they are generating creates more confidence in and inspiration from the evolution of coaching," said ICF Global President Janet M. Harvey. "We can all benefit from this data, coaches and consumers alike. Knowing what the field looks like helps to strengthen coach confidence, and improve public awareness. We are seeing a new level of understanding about the value of the profession and how it stimulates continued positive impact for clients."

"As more people experience the power and benefits of coaching, business professionals - especially consultants and trainers - are becoming professional coaches in addition to the work done in their respective fields," explained Harvey. "Coaching is an extremely powerful tool that many of today's leaders and entrepreneurs are adding to their professional services."

Over 12,000 coaches representing 117 countries throughout Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America participated in the study commissioned by ICF and conducted independently by the International Survey Unit of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in 2011.

Kaplan Test Prep Launches Free 90-Minute Adaptive SAT® Diagnostic Developed by MIT Graduates to Predict Student Performance Feb 9, 2012 08:15AM

Practice Test by Testive Adapts Question Difficulty to Match Individual Ability Level; Results Use Adaptive Testing Research to Reliably Predict Test-Takers’ Scores

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Until now, the only way students could gauge how they’d perform on the SAT was to take a 4-hour practice test mirroring the actual exam. To create a more efficient assessment tool, Kaplan Test Prep has teamed with Testive, an adaptive test development company, to create the first-ever adaptive 90-minute practice SAT that can reliably predict a test-taker’s score level. Using computer adaptive algorithms developed at MIT and built upon decades of academic research on adaptive testing, the “Kaplan SAT TurboTest,” powered by Testive, can help students understand their current score without having to sit through a full-length 4-hour practice exam.

The first and only computer-adaptive SAT practice test, the Kaplan SAT TurboTest creates an individualized test experience for each student by adjusting the difficulty of questions as the test progresses. If a student answers a question correctly, the test difficulty level increases. If a student gets a question wrong, the test gets easier. By adapting to the test-taker’s ability, the SAT TurboTest is able to create an accurate picture of his or her predicted performance more efficiently, using fewer questions.

“Today’s students have jam-packed schedules, so we aim to help them meet their goals as effectively and efficiently as possible,” said Justin Serrano, president of college prep programs for Kaplan Test Prep. “Getting students a reliable score assessment in less than half the time of traditional tests helps them identify and focus on areas of study opportunity more quickly.”

“Combining Kaplan’s world-class content with Testive’s ability to speed up traditional tests gives students the baseline knowledge they need to start the SAT preparation process,” said Miro Kazakoff, co-founder of Testive. “It’s the only SAT practice test currently available that uses computer adaptive algorithms to zoom in on student ability level without making them churn through 167 questions .”

The Kaplan SAT TurboTest is available to download online and can be used on the iPad® using a web browser.
