Nisso Announces Completion of NISSO HPC (Hydroxypropyl Cellulose) Production Capacity Expansion

Nippon Soda Co., Ltd. (Nisso) has completed capacity expansion and qualification on schedule, allowing the company to respond to the growth in worldwide demand for NISSO HPC. The expanded production facility in Nihongi, Japan now has multiple production lines that operate independently to provide increased supply security. A robust global warehouse and distribution network provides responsive supply to customers with short lead times. NISSO HPC is a highly efficient ingredient, often used as a tablet binder in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical products.

A particular focus of the expansion was to support growth in the unique, low-molecular weight, fine-powder excipient grade of hydroxypropyl cellulose, NISSO HPC SSL-SFP. "Many customers have found the SSL-SFP grade to provide superior problem solving performance in difficult tablet formulations. Usage levels as low as 1.0 to 1.5% have been shown to solve manufacturing problems like tablet capping or low hardness, allowing customers to increase tablet press speed," commented Mr. Kenji Sugisawa, Global Manager of NISSO HPC.

Additionally, a harmonized standard for Hydroxypropyl Cellulose has been formally approved by the USP Monographs, European Pharmacopeia, and the Japanese Pharmacopeia on December 1, 2014. NISSO HPC produced after that date will conform to the harmonized standard and will make it easier for customers to develop a single product formulation that meets global regulatory requirements.

Nisso has a long history in the HPC market. 2017 will mark the 50th anniversary of the first HPC production; in 2020, the company will celebrate its 100th anniversary.
