Newly Inducted Into the Basketball Hall of Fame, Shaquille O'Neal, Joins the Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research Foundation to Raise Funds for Groundbreaking Research in the Quest for a Cure
NEW YORK, Sept. 12, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research Foundation announces that, for the seventh year, they have been chosen as a beneficiary of Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund's annual Charity Day event, sponsored by Cantor Fitzgerald, BGC Partners and Newmark Grubb Knight Frank.
"We are grateful that the Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund has selected the Fisher Center and Alzheimer's research as a cause worthy of its support," said Kent L. Karosen, President/CEO Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research Foundation.
Cantor Fitzgerald and its affiliates hold Charity Day each year to commemorate the 658 co-workers who perished on 9/11 by donating their global revenues on that day to charities around the world. This year marks the 15th anniversary of the attacks. To date, the fund has donated more than $280 million dollars to charity. Celebrity ambassadors participate on behalf of charities, and bring energy and excitement to the trading floor. They speak with clients over the phone, and most take part in real trades with financial institutions, guided by a broker. This year, legendary athlete and new Basketball Hall of Famer, Shaquille O'Neal, will be acting as the Fisher Center's Charity Ambassador, aiming to raise awareness of Alzheimer's and the importance of continued research funding for a cure.
During this year's Charity Day, a portion of the Fisher Center's funding will go toward the Pat Summitt Foundation and The Pat Summitt Alzheimer's Clinic at UT Medical Center. Beloved Basketball Hall of Fame coach, Pat Summitt, suffered from Alzheimer's and the Fisher Center is proud to partner with the clinic in the battle against Alzheimer's.
"Pat Summitt and I shared an obvious love of basketball and she has been a tremendous inspiration to so many people, including myself," said Shaquille O'Neal. "I am proud to support the Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research Foundation in the quest to find a cure for Alzheimer's."
Every single day, almost 1,500 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, and in 2015, it is expected that the treatment of Alzheimer's will cost more than $200 billion dollars in health services, without a cure. In the next 30-40 years, the spiraling costs could threaten the very existence of the critical senior safety nets, Medicare and Medicaid, which presently cover more than one-half of these costs.
