What are your kids more excited about this Christmas, presents from Santa or setting up the Nativity scene? While Santa and gifts are an enjoyable part of the holiday season for children, pastor Greg Scherrer wants to make sure it is not the only thing that makes them excited for the holidays. Scherrer strives to redirect the focus of children’s joy to Jesus, which he does in his new children’s book “The Wonder of Believing.”
“My desire to write a children’s book was motivated by a movie that displayed children living in awe and wonder over the various activities of Christmas and the over exaggeration of Santa Claus,” he said. “I wanted to give children a reason to have that same awe for Jesus Christ and for what Christ did for them at the cross as He died to free them from the judgment of sin.”
Scherrer also raises the issue of the ethics of telling children about Santa Claus. He believes that perpetuating the tradition of Santa Claus sets a precedent of dishonesty, which may be harmful to families in the long run.
When the main feeling of the Christmas holiday is joy, Scherrer wants to ensure that children focus on where their true joy lies from the beginning – from a relationship with Jesus. “The Wonder of Believing” gives parents a tool to talk about the holiday in a way that drives the excitement and focus to Jesus, rather than Santa Claus.
“Santa is the man in red that delivers gifts but the red blood of Christ delivers us from sin,” said Scherrer. “Children are not too young to hear this message.”
