Microscan Wins Patent Suit Against Competitor

May 4, 2015 7:30 PM EDT

Renton, WA (PRWEB) May 04, 2015

Microscan Systems, Inc. announced today that a jury has decided in favor of the company in its patent infringement lawsuit against Cognex Corporation. According to court documents, the lawsuit filed by Microscan alleged that Cognex's DataMan handheld imagers (7500, 8500, 8600, 9500, and other variants) infringe upon U.S. Patent No. 6,352,204 (the "204 patent") held by Microscan. The 204 patent is fundamental to the optimal reading of difficult-to-decode direct part marks (DPM) using low-angle dark field illumination.

Cognex was found to infringe all three of the asserted patent claims, and the jury rejected Cognex's invalidity challenges to those claims. The jury also found that Microscan was entitled to reasonable royalty damages for past infringement. The case Microscan Systems, Inc. v. Cognex Corporation, case number 1:14-cv-06952, was tried in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York with U.S. District Judge, the Honorable Jed S. Rakoff, presiding.

"Microscan's history of major innovation in automatic identification and machine vision dates back to the early 1980s," said Scott Summerville, President of Microscan. "We have over 100 patents in our portfolio and we continue to develop industry-leading technology in the field. I want to thank the jury for their decision as well as the Microscan innovators who were involved in the development of our Mobile Hawk Handheld DPM Imager, which leverages the 204 patent."
