TROY, Mich., Oct. 18, 2016 /PRNewswire/ --  Meritor, Inc. (NYSE: MTOR) announced it has donated $5,000 to help with relief efforts in southeastern North Carolina where many people were left homeless from Hurricane Matthew.

The company's contribution from the Meritor Trust Fund to Union Chapel Harvest Ministries supports efforts by the American Red Cross to assist hundreds of residents housed temporarily in shelters at Purnell Swett High School shelter in Maxton, South Robeson High School in Rowland and St. Pauls High School in St. Pauls.

"Homes in and near Robeson County were hit hard by Hurricane Matthew, and we sincerely hope this contribution helps residents recover from widespread damage in this part of the state," said Krista Sohm, vice president, Marketing & Communications for Meritor.

Meritor facilities in Laurinburg, Fletcher and Forest City in addition to Morristown, Tennessee collected and distributed water, food, hygiene products and other necessities to employees impacted by the hurricane. Laurinburg delivered 15 cases of drinking water and care packages with nonperishable food items to homes of 12 employees whose water was contaminated and refrigerated food had spoiled. The Forest City plant also sent nonperishable food and hygiene items, and the Fletcher facility provided flood buckets – five-gallon containers containing masks, trash bags, cleaning supplies, bleach and other items needed to help the affected employees sanitize their water-damaged homes.

"This community really rallied together," said Chris Drose, site manager, Laurinburg for Meritor. "They were unselfish and were looking for ways to help others. It was just a complete group effort with everyone pulling together to get things back to normal."

According to news reports, the state of North Carolina estimates $1.5 billion in damage to homes, businesses and government facilities statewide.
