New York, New York (PRWEB) April 19, 2015

New court documents issued by the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) indicate that Lipitor lawsuits (http://www.lipitorlawsuitcenter.com/) continue to mount in the federal litigation underway in U.S. District Court, District of South Carolina. According to the April 15th filing, at least 2,185 new cases have been filed in the proceeding on behalf of individuals who allegedly developed Type 2 diabetes due to their use of the cholesterol-lowering statin. This represents an increase of 110 filings since the Panel issued its previous report on March 16th. (In re Lipitor (Atorvastatin) Litigation, MDL No. 2502)

"Our Firm is representing clients in this proceeding, and our legal staff continues to receive requests for case evaluations from individuals who allegedly developed diabetes due to Lipitor. Considering that Lipitor has ranked among the best selling drugs in the world, we are not surprised by the continued growth of this litigation,*" says Sandy A. Liebhard, a partner at Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing numerous victims of defective medical devices and drugs including Lipitor. The Firm continues to offer free and confidential Lipitor lawsuit evaluations to individuals who developed diabetes after use of this cholesterol statin.

Lipitor Litigation
According to court documents, the Lipitor lawsuits involving the alleged development of Type 2 diabetes began to mount in U.S. courts after the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) announced in February 2012 that all statin labels would be updated to include information about their potentially harmful effects on blood glucose levels. Initially, fewer than two dozen cases were transferred to the multidistrict litigation when it was created by the JPML in February 2014.

Court records indicate that all of the cases pending in the District of South Carolina accuse Pfizer Inc. of concealing data linking Lipitor to diabetes, and of failing to warn the public and medical community about this risk in order to protect the profits it derived from sales of the drug. The lawsuits further allege the modifications made to the Lipitor label in response to the FDA's 2012 mandate still do not adequately warn patients about its association with the disorder.

Lipitor patients who allegedly developed Type 2 diabetes due to the medication may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other injury related damages.
