May 4, 2016 2:23 PM EDT

SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 05/04/16 -- Maker Faire, the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth, announced today the program and speaker agenda for the upcoming Bay Area Faire, taking place Friday through Sunday, May 20-22, 2016, at the San Mateo Event Center in San Mateo, CA. Over 250 other Maker Movement leaders will be on hand to share inspiration and instruction about making. Topics range from virtual reality to the making of music to energy, art, education, STEAM and making in the classroom, robotics, electronics, food and homesteading, women in making, and more.

"Star and Will are excellent examples of the caliber, and diversity, of Makers we've brought together for this year's program," said Dale Dougherty, founder of Maker Media and co-founder of Maker Faire. "The value that these leaders, from a wide variety of fields, bring to the Bay Area Maker community is tangible. Attendees will take home information they can use immediately to make themselves better Makers and advance their projects. From hearing about Maker values and the Maker culture to how to get involved in new projects, follow their passion, and share with other Makers, it's a fantastic opportunity for the community to gain knowledge directly from such talent, and be inspired by their stories and experiences."

Over 200 presentations, spanning eight stages each covering different topics and themes, will be available, including a new "Show & Tell" stage where local makers can take their projects to the stage to share with the community and the Maker Pro stage that will focus on makers who have taken their projects from prototype to commercial product. All presentations, speakers, stages, and schedules can be found here: http://makerfaire.com/bay-area-2016/schedule/. Highlights of the program include:

  • Star Simpson, a hardware builder with a passion for creating beautiful circuit boards, will share the art of building hardware -- and the practical aspects of creating a strong aesthetic and bringing graphics into the hardware world, as she helps bring Forrest Mims' classic drawn circuit designs to life
  • FOO VR founder and technology lover, Will Smith, will help predict the future by showing how to study smartphones, CPUs, and cheeseburgers to tell which technologies will be available (and cheap) to use in the future
  • Maker, tested.com founder, and educator Adam Savage will return to Maker Faire to share his wit and wisdom on all things making
  • Ariel Waldman, NASA advisor, Spacehack.org founder, and author of The Hacker's Guide to the Galaxy, take attendees on a tour of our universe, showing how anyone can actively explore the final frontier through getting excited and making things
  • Simone Giertz is a Swedish inventor, maker, robotics enthusiast, and professional YouTuber who will talk with Faire attendees about the importance of building useless things, showing that doing things the "wrong way" is sometimes the only way to build things the right way
  • Internationally acclaimed artist, Theo Jansen, will be sharing the process of, and stories about, how his amazing, self-propelled kinetic creations-Strandbeest-have come to life and evolved over the years
  • Thud Rumble's Richard "DJ QBert" Quitevis and Ritche "Yogafrog" Desuasido's presentation, "Innovation and the DJ," will excite music makers as walk through their culture of making ground-breaking work, which spans from pioneering skratching to collaborations that turn turntables into tesla coil triggering musical instruments

Google Returns as Goldsmith Sponsor, Including the Learn to Solder Activity

Google continues its support of Maker Faire Bay Area as a Goldsmith Sponsor, illustrating how important the Maker community is to them and highlighting making as a key thread in the fabric of Google's corporate DNA.

Google will showcase for Faire attendees what Google employees are making on the job and in their free time in their 'Making & Science' area. Google team projects as well as personal projects and an interactive art installation made by Google employees from around the United States will be available for attendees to see. Google will also demonstrate how its Making & Science team is supporting scientists and Makers of all ages.

Google will also be at the always popular 'Learn to Solder' tent where Makers of all ages can learn or improve their soldering skills by making their very own blinky LED pin. At the Learn to Solder tent, Google will help participants remember that safety comes first by providing a pair of Google safety glasses to each person. At Maker Faire Bay Area 2015, Google distributed over 100,000 pairs of safety glasses to Faire attendees.

Tickets for Maker Faire Bay Area 2016 are on sale now and available at online only, advance pricing through Thursday, May 19, at http://mfba2016.eventbrite.com.
