LOS ANGELES, Dec. 1, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- LAUP Board Chair David Crippens has announced the planned retirement of Chief Executive Officer Dr. Celia C. Ayala from her current position effective June 2016. Dr. Ayala will continue to serve as an advisor to LAUP when she retires next summer. Until then, she will be working closely with the LAUP Board and Cabinet members to ensure that the transition process is a smooth one for both LAUP and their providers and partners.

"LAUP is on solid footing and is poised to go from strength to strength," said Dr. Ayala. "With a new strategic plan in place and an expanding commitment to ensuring high-quality early care and education, LAUP is ready for its next chapter and a new leader."

Dr. Ayala's retirement will complete a six-year tenure as CEO highlighted by legislative achievements, successful outcomes for children, and a comprehensive strategic planning process that sets LAUP on a steady path for future growth. The LAUP Board will oversee the selection of Dr. Ayala's successor and has retained the services of an executive search firm to assist in this process. LAUP hopes to announce a new CEO this spring.

Dr. Ayala has dedicated over 40 years to improving early care and education. Under her leadership, LAUP prepared nearly 115,000 children for kindergarten and beyond by funding, rating and providing training and coaching services – raising the level of quality for preschool programs throughout Los Angeles County. Earlier this year, LAUP was selected among thousands of organizations across the country and honored as a "Bright Spot in Education" by the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics.

"Dr. Ayala has been a passionate advocate for children and the early care and education field, and she has left an indelible mark on LAUP as a leader," said David Crippens, Chairman of LAUP's Board of Directors. "Under her leadership, LAUP has set a national standard for the field, and the organization stands ready to continue its trajectory of success."

"LAUP is poised for continued growth and impact," added Crippens. "We are ready to build on the strong foundation that Celia has laid, and the future looks great for LAUP. More importantly, the future looks great for the children and communities we serve through LAUP's programs, partnerships and advocacy work."
