Kimmel Center and SEI Bring Mixed-Media Sculptures by Andy Yoder to Commonwealth Plaza

"Licorice Shoes" and "Pipe" Kick Off the Fall Installation of Emerging-Contemporary Art

October 27, 2015 9:03 AM EDT

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- (Marketwired) -- 10/27/15 -- The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts and SEI (NASDAQ: SEIC) are pleased to present the latest art installation in the Kimmel Center's Commonwealth Plaza with the works of American artist Andy Yoder. The two mixed-media pieces, "Licorice Shoes" and "Pipe," will be on display through December 2015. Both works are part of the revolving exhibition of work from the West Collection, an international, emerging-contemporary art collection owned by Alfred P. West, Jr., Chairman and CEO of SEI, and curated by his daughter, Paige West.

"This latest installation ushers in the third season of our partnership with SEI and the West Collection. We are delighted to continue providing our patrons with a one-of-a-kind contemporary art experience," said Anne Ewers, Kimmel Center President and CEO. "Audiences and first time attendees alike find inspiration in the innovative spirit generated by our partnership with SEI."

The Fall 2015 installation of Yoder's works depicts the innovative and thematic tone of questioning. "Licorice Shoes" and "Pipe" are representative of the unwritten rules, attitudes, and fears that are prevalent today, and our reactions to them. The seven-foot, mixed-media pieces are sculpted with licorice, silicone, rice paper, and Styrofoam. This new installation replaces "Shark Tank", a tire sculpture installed in January as part of the Winter 2015 installation.

Yoder's "Licorice Shoes" and "Pipe" are among the 3,200 works owned by the West Collection of international, emerging-contemporary art. Developed in the 1990s by Al West and his daughter, Paige West, the West Collection is featured at SEI's offices around the world and can be seen at various art institutes across the United States. SEI's partnership with the Kimmel began in November 2013, with the opening of the SEI Innovation Studio, a 200-seat venue at the Kimmel Center.

"We believe that art encourages the creation of new ideas and inspires exceptional performance," said Al West. "These two sculptures have been on display at SEI's Oaks offices so we know from experience how much people enjoy seeing them. We are pleased to be able to share these powerful, yet fun, pieces with the Kimmel and Philadelphia communities."

The Kimmel Center and SEI were awarded the 2015 "Business + Arts Partnership Award" by the Arts & Business Council of Greater Philadelphia, commending the partners for their commitment to making the region culturally vibrant and economically strong. This latest installation not only exposes the broader Philadelphia community to the West Collection, but also demonstrates SEI's continuing commitment to art and innovation.
