Jamia Millia Islamia University Wins Record LINPACK Score at ISC 2015 Student Cluster Competition with Support of CoolIT Systems & Boston

Calgary, AB. (PRWEB) July 21, 2015

CoolIT Systems, the world leader in direct contact liquid cooling solutions for desktops, servers and data centers, is proud to announce that Jamia Millia Islamia University (JMI) of New Dehli has been awarded first place in the LINPACK test at the ISC Student Cluster Competition in Frankfurt using a liquid cooled configuration. This is the 2nd consecutive year that CoolIT and Boston Limited have partnered to sponsor the winning student team.

JMI won the LINPACK award with a record breaking score of 10.78Tflops that translated into an energy efficient 3.59 Tflops/kW, enough to achieve an estimated rank of #6 on the Green500, a list of the most energy efficient supercomputers in the world.

The JMI team was equipped with a high performance Boston GPU cluster fitted with a Rack DCLC AHx20 liquid cooling solution from CoolIT Systems. JMI beat the 10.18Tflop record previously set by 2014 team EPCC from the University of Edinburgh (also Sponsored by Boston and CoolIT Systems).

The system consisted of four 1U Boston Venom servers, each utilising two Intel Xeon 'Haswell-EP' processors, two NVIDIA K80 Tesla GPUs and Mellanox EDR IB connectivity coupled to a Mellanox EDR switched fabric. Direct Contact Liquid Cooling technology by CoolIT Systems was also used to cool critical system components resulting in a lower overall power draw.

"Having won the LINPACK challenge before, we knew that we had to excel in this year's competition in order to break our own record," said David Power Head of HPC at Boston Limited. "We implemented liquid cooling technology from our partners CoolIT Systems in order to improve the power efficiency and performance of the NVIDIA K80s. Boston also optimised the air cooling in the Supermicro servers to complement the liquid cooling technology. This is a first for the New Delhi team as they are the first from this region to take part in this renowned event."

"CoolIT is proud to have been a part of the success of Jamia Millia Islamia University (JMI) of New Dehli," said Geoff Lyon of CoolIT Systems. "Our partnership with Boston and the dedication of the New Delhi team is what made the win possible."

"Pairing CoolIT Systems liquid cooled technology with Boston's Supermicro-based HPC servers allowed the team to divert more power for compute and less on cooling. The students reduced the power required for cooling by removing fans from the server and allocating more of their resources to compute nodes," said Michael Holliday, Senior HPC Systems Engineer and Boston mentor to the team.
