Jaimi Goodfriend Joins Point72 as First Director of Point72 Academy

April 9, 2015 4:36 PM EDT

STAMFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Jaimi Goodfriend, CFA, will head Point72 Asset Management’s (Point72) Point72 Academy as it welcomes its first class of students to the Firm this summer, Point72’s President Douglas Haynes announced today.

The Academy is Point72’s initiative to recruit and train new college graduates as long/short (L/S) equities investment professionals on an accelerated schedule. The Academy also conducts a summer internship for undergraduate students.

Ms. Goodfriend will become the Academy’s first director, responsible for creating and teaching the Academy curriculum, teaching financial modeling, sophisticated research skills and methods for sector- and company-specific research. Academy students will receive intensive training in compliance, applicable securities laws and ethics.

In addition to their classes, Academy members will work with Point72 L/S investment professionals. After more than a year, they are assigned to work full-time with L/S investment teams. They are paid during the training period.

The first Academy class will start in August 2015 and includes graduates from the University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University, New York University, Yale University, Boston College, University of Illinois, University of Chicago, and Yeshiva University, a veteran of the United States Army Special Forces, as well as other top universities and colleges. The first Academy summer internship class will begin in June 2015 and run eight weeks.

“The competition for the brightest young minds has never been sharper,” Mr. Haynes said. “Our Investment Talent Development Team does a good job looking for bright young people, but we compete with the major banks, private equity firms and Silicon Valley for the same people. The Academy will help us get first crack at the next generation of investor talent before they might go elsewhere.

“We’re fortunate to have someone of Jaimi’s experience and caliber to lead the Academy. She has an excellent teaching background, but as important, she has the strong real world experience to build the Academy and make it great. The Academy and Jaimi will play an important role in further developing Point72’s L/S home-grown investment talent,” Mr. Haynes said.

Seventy percent of Point72’s L/S equities Portfolio Managers (PMs) are home-grown.

“This is a compelling opportunity for the students, for Point72 and for me,” Ms. Goodfriend said. “Undergraduate recruiting has been tried before in the hedge fund industry, but was not continued and the combination of the recruiting and the Point72 Academy is unique. It has the potential to transform how we hire and prepare young investor talent.”

Ms. Goodfriend was an adjunct lecturer at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign and DePaul University in Chicago, where she developed graduate and undergraduate course offerings in hedge funds, portfolio management, alternative investments, investment banking, and financial statement analysis. In 2012, she developed, launched, and was named the Director of the University of Illinois’ Investment Banking Academy.

Before teaching collegiately, Ms. Goodfriend was an equity research analyst in the hedge fund industry, most recently at Citadel Investment Group and Balyasny Asset Management (Balyasny). Before joining Balyasny, Ms. Goodfriend worked as an equity research analyst at First Analysis Corporation. She has served as a manager of absolute returns and fixed income at the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and began her career in Mergers and Acquisitions at Bank of America.

Ms. Goodfriend holds an undergraduate economics degree from the University of Michigan, an MBA from the J. L. Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, and is a Chartered Financial Analyst.
