Investors Maintain Bullish Outlook on Markets Despite Difficult Economy

May 13, 2008 12:52 PM EDT

SARASOTA, Fla., May 13 /PRNewswire/ -- MoneyShow.com, the largest multimedia investment education destination for investors, traders, and financial advisors officially announced the results of the Investors' Sentiment Indicator yesterday at The Money Show Las Vegas. Despite a majority of Americans believing we are in a recession, the survey revealed that 56% of investors are leaning toward a bullish sentiment for the S&P 500 for the remainder of 2008. Most bullish investors seem somewhat confident about the markets with 43% indicating that the S&P 500 will rise less than 10% for the remainder of the year, and 13% stating that the S&P would rise 10% or more.

In line with statements made by the Federal Reserve, 67% of investors polled report that they expect the Federal Reserve will keep short-term rates at current levels. With no further rate reductions on the horizon, 79% of investors believe inflation will increase compared to only 37% from the September 2007 sentiment indicator.

Investors remain divided over expectations for US economic growth, with 43% of investors surveyed anticipating an increase, and another 39% predicting a decrease in GDP growth for the rest of 2008. One of the biggest increases since last September is how investors feel which asset class will perform the best, with 42% anticipating commodities to perform the strongest (up by 25%). The sentiment on large-cap US stocks, small-cap US stocks, and foreign stocks all decreased slightly.

The MoneyShow.com Investors' Sentiment Indicator polled 492 private investors from its member list between May 2 and May 10, 2008. The complete findings of the Investors' Sentiment Indicator will be available on the Investors channel on MoneyShow.com. The site will commission several other indicators throughout the year among high-net-worth individual investors, active traders, and investment experts that will be announced in conjunction with its various trade shows and made available on MoneyShow.com.
