IT Industry Gains 7,700 Jobs in March

The IT industry gained 7,700 jobs for the month of March, according to the latest employment numbers released from the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics released on Friday, April 1, 2016.

According to the Economic Situation Report, the IT industry's job growth is down by 34 percent over February's gain of 11,700 jobs. IT job data is collected from multiple sectors, including the data processing, hosting and related services subsector, the computer and electronic product manufacturing subsector, the computer systems design and related services subsector, and the management and technical consulting services subsector.

Data processing, hosting and related services gained 200 jobs last month, a slight decrease from the 600 jobs gained in February. The subsector now sits at 298,000 jobs, a 1.7 percent increase over the 292,800 jobs gained in March 2015. This industry data includes computer programmers, computer support specialists, computer systems analysts, application developers, and systems software developers.

The computer and electronic product manufacturing subsector, which includes computer hardware engineers, computer software engineers (applications and systems software), electrical and electronic engineering technicians and equipment assemblers, and semiconductor processors lost 3,400 jobs last month. Over the last 12 months, the subsector has lost 11,100 jobs.

Computer systems design and related services, a part of the professional and business services sector gained 4,100 jobs in March. Over the last 12 months, the subsector has increased by 4.8 percent or 90,800 jobs. Management and technical consulting services grew by 6,800 jobs, a 17 percent increase over February's gain of 5,800 jobs.

Total nonfarm payroll employment across all industries increased by 215,000 in March while the unemployment rate increased slightly to 5 percent, or 8 million unemployed persons. Over the year, the unemployment rate and the number of unemployed persons has decreased by 0.5 percentage point and 591,000, respectively. Last month, employment gains largely occurred in retail trade, construction and healthcare while job losses occurred in manufacturing and mining.
