Hero Marks 35th Anniversary of World's First Jumbo Jet Crash With New Book, Tour, Reunion

November 5, 2009 6:00 AM EST

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. - Thomas C. Scott became one of the jumbo jet era's first hero crew members 35 years ago this Nov. 20 when he single-handedly rescued a dozen people from the first-ever fatal crash of a Boeing 747 just before the plane exploded, in Nairobi, Kenya.

Scott, now a financial expert and Forbes.com contributor, is marking this historic tragedy with the publication of his new book, "Fasten Your Financial Seatbelt: What surviving an airline crash taught me about retirement planning" [http://www.financialseatbelt.com].

Scott compares how people react in a plane crash with how they respond to a financial crisis. Just as shock and paralysis kills airline passengers, in the recent financial crash such behavior helped destroy the retirement plans of millions. He explains why it happened and how to avoid it in the future. "Your best chance of surviving a disaster is to prepare for one."

Two of the people Scott rescued from Lufthansa Flight 540 were Carl and Renate Kahn of Dallas, TX, both German-born Jews who had escaped the Holocaust in the late 1930s as children. The Kahns live in Dallas and have agreed to be interviewed. Their teenaged daughter was traveling with them and was also saved by Scott.

The Kahns used some of the insurance money they received from the crash to found a Holocaust Museum in Dallas. Renate Kahn remembers Kristallnacht, the anti-Jewish rioting that marked the start of Hitler's Final Solution.
