Halloween Gets Wet in Annual Underwater Pumpkin Carving Competition at the South Carolina Aquarium

October 21, 2016 4:15 PM EDT

Charleston, S.C. (PRWEB) October 21, 2016

Carving pumpkins on dry land is hard enough, carving a pumpkin 30 feet underwater with sharks swimming around is quite the feat. That's exactly what divers at the South Carolina Aquarium did today as part of the Aquarium's annual underwater pumpkin carving competition. The six divers carved sea-inspired designs into the pumpkins while submerged in the deepest tank in North America, the Aquarium's Great Ocean Tank, which is 42-feet deep and filled with hundreds of fishy friends. One diver had a special surprise--instead of a carving a traditional pumpkin, the diver opted for a pineapple instead!

It took the divers approximately 20 minutes to carve the pumpkins, guests at the Aquarium then voted on their favorite design through applause. This year the octopus took home the win. Underwater carving serves as a form of enrichment for the animals that live in the Great Ocean Tank. The activity offers a form of stimulation and introduces new, fun objects into their environment.

The next underwater carving will take place October 28, at 11 a.m. The extraordinary underwater carving experience is included with Aquarium admission. For more information call (843) 577-FISH (3474) or visit scaquarium.org.
