GroundLink™ Probes Travelers on Stress Triggers During National Stress Awareness Month

April 6, 2015 3:05 AM EDT

New York, NY (PRWEB) April 06, 2015

April is National Stress Awareness Month, and with overcrowded flights, mounting flight cancellations and delays, travel has become increasingly stressful for Americans. GroundLink™, a global leader in tech-enabled black car service, surveyed more than 5,000 customers from across the U.S. to determine what causes them the most stress while traveling.

Travelers reported that being late for their flight was the number one most stressful pre-travel activity followed by getting stuck in traffic on the way to the airport. Flight delays, cancellations or missing a connection were ranked as the number one stressor while traveling. This was followed by lost or delayed luggage and getting sick when traveling.

Most travelers surveyed (80 percent), prefer to get to the airport as early as possible to avoid missing their flight, while a fifth (20 percent) of those surveyed would rather cut it as close to their flight time as possible to spend the least amount of time at the airport. When it comes to modes of transportation, planes cause the most stress for travelers (39 percent) followed by public transportation (30 percent) and taxicabs (14 percent).

"No doubt that travel today causes an increasing amount of stress for both business and leisure travelers," said Dean Sivley, CEO of GroundLink. "We've looked at ways to help eliminate some of this stress including a consumer-friendly app, which provides travelers with the ability to track their ride in real time and communicate directly with their driver. We also provide text alerts to let customers know that their car is en route and that it has arrived, a sophisticated flight tracking capability and an on-time pick-up guarantee."

Of the nation's airports, New York airports rank as the most stressful according to those surveyed. LaGuardia (LGA) is the number one stress-inducing airport according to 20 percent of respondents, followed by John F. Kennedy (JFK) at 17 percent and Newark (EWR) at 14 percent. Chicago O'Hare (ORD) comes in as the fourth most stressful airport (eight percent) followed by Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta (ATL), according to five percent of those surveyed.

Leave the Spouse, Kids and Relatives at Home; Pack a Good Book

When asked which traveling companion causes the most stress, spouse/significant other was cited by 19 percent, followed by kids (eight percent) and relatives (eight percent). Only six percent said that their boss caused them stress.

More than half (59 percent) of travelers read to reduce stress, while 38 percent prefer to unwind when traveling by watching television, and 31 percent prefer to exercise. Twenty-eight percent find staying in touch with family and friends stress reducing, while 23 percent turn to alcoholic beverages and 17 percent turn to eating junk food.
