Granddaughter of Fruehauf Trailer Company's Founder to Speak at SAE International Commercial Vehicle Engineering Congress Today

August Fruehauf was the son of German immigrants and a Detroit blacksmith when in 1914 a local lumber dealer asked him to create an alternative to four-wheeled, horse-drawn wagons.

The result was the invention of the first semi-trailer and the founding of the company that would bear Fruehauf's name - Fruehauf Trailers. From the first crude trailer that was pulled by a cut-down Model T Ford, Fruehauf grew his fledgling company to a multi-million dollar, international operation.

His granddaughter, Ruth Ann Fruehauf, has captured the history of the company in a book, Singing Wheels. The 128-page book meticulously records the company's story in content and extensive photographs from the family archives.

Ruth Ann will discuss her book and the history of Fruehauf Trailers at SAE International's 2015 Commercial Vehicle Engineering Congress on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in Room 30 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Ill.
