In July 2015, GE Global Research hosted the Industrial Internet Consortium's Summer Conference at its research campus in Niskayuna, NY. More than 500 participants from all over the world attended. The 3-day event included a world-class slate of speakers on IoT, 50 kiosk presentations and live technology demonstrations as well. (Photo: Business Wire)

The IIC was founded to develop and grow the Industrial Internet across different industry sectors and within manufacturing, we’re seeing a rapid and dramatic transformation in how products are developed, manufactured and serviced as the physical and digital worlds converge. The IIC sits at the nexus of physical + digital, serving as a bridge and major test bed for connecting companies and other collaborators to accelerate this integration.

“Through the Industrial Internet Consortium, we are breaking down technology silos, improving machine-to-machine communications and ultimately bring the physical and digital worlds closer together to transform manufacturing,” said Joseph Salvo, Director at GE Global research and a founder of the Industrial Internet Consortium. “The only way to foster this is by helping industry make real connections and test real-world industrial applications, and that is exactly what the Consortium is helping to make happen.”

The Industrial Internet represents the next big wave of innovation that fundamentally transforms major industrial sectors that drive our global economy such as energy, transport and healthcare. GE estimates that the Industrial Internet could add $10-$15 trillion to the global GDP over the next 20 years. This transformation already is underway, which the IIC and its membership are accelerating.

In manufacturing, the IIC has been a vital support network for the creation of Industrial Internet testbeds where new applications, new products, new services and new processes can be initiated and rigorously tested. A great example is the High Speed Network Infrastructure that GE demonstrated with Cisco last summer. GE software scientists and developers created an industry test bed that can transfer data at 100 gigabits per second to support seamless machine-2-machine communications and data transfer across connected control systems, big infrastructure products and manufacturing plants.

GE is investing billions of dollars in the Industrial Internet overall and is supporting all facets of the IIC through research, collaboration and outreach.

About The Manufacturing Leadership Awards

The Manufacturing Leadership Awards, now in their 12th year, honor manufacturing companies and individual manufacturing leaders that are shaping the future of global manufacturing. Winning projects and individual manufacturing leaders have demonstrated achievement in one of a wide range of categories, and are chosen by a panel of expert judges for results that enabled the manufacturers to set themselves apart from their competitors and that have delivered clear and compelling value, return on investment, and other tangible outcomes. There are several winners in each category.

In addition to selecting winners in each awards category, the judges select one High Achiever in each category, as well as a 2015 Manufacturer of the Year for small and large enterprises. Manufacturer of the Year, along with the top-scoring project in each category, will be announced at the 12th Annual Manufacturing Leadership Awards Gala on June 8, 2016, during the Manufacturing Leadership Summit, taking place June 6-9, 2016 at the Omni la Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, CA.

The theme for the 12th Annual Manufacturing Leadership Summit is “Manufacturing 4.0: The New Rules of Leadership.” The event enables senior-level executives in all aspects of manufacturing an opportunity to network with and learn from the best minds in the industry. The format consists of roundtables, networking events, and unique question-and-answer sessions designed to provide the tools and ideas necessary to solve today’s manufacturing challenges and to explore revolutionary new opportunities.
