HOUSTON, March 31, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- For the third consecutive year, GDF SUEZ Energy Resources will provide visitors to the Houston Museum of Natural Science with a "green" destination in honor of Earth Day by donating Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) to offset 100 percent of the nonprofit's estimated electricity consumption during the month of April.

The gift further strengthens the museum's dedication to environmental responsibility and underscores the retail electricity provider's efforts to deliver sustainable energy management strategies.

"As a natural science museum, we are committed to educating our visitors on the important resources of our planet while at the same time setting an example of environmental responsibility for our community," said Joel Bartsch, president and curator of gems and minerals at the Houston Museum of Natural Science.  "Our support of green energy reflects this dedication, and we appreciate GDF SUEZ Energy Resources for their continued generosity in backing our efforts."

The RECs, which are Green-e© Energy Certified, represent the environmental attributes or benefits associated with a specific quantity of energy generated from a renewable source, such as solar or wind. According to www.eia.gov, GDF SUEZ Energy Resources' donations to the museum over the last three years are equivalent to the carbon sequestered by 19,066 tree seedlings grown for 10 years, the removal of about 744 metric tons of CO2 from the atmosphere, the displacement of the estimated annual greenhouse gas emissions of 157 passenger vehicles, or the CO2 emissions of 68 homes' energy use for one year.

"It's an honor to support the Houston Museum of Natural Science," said Sam Henry, president and CEO of GDF SUEZ Energy Resources.  "We share a common focus on promoting clean energy and are pleased to continue to help this landmark venue as they do their part to reduce their carbon footprint and build a sustainable planet."

One of the most heavily attended museum venues in the United States, the Houston Museum of Natural Science houses the Burke Baker Planetarium, Wortham Giant Screen Theatre, Cockrell Butterfly Center, and a wide range of permanent and traveling exhibits.  It also maintains two satellite facilities – the George Observatory and the Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land.

Green-e© is the nation's leading independent certification and verification program for renewable energy and greenhouse gas emission reductions in the retail market.
