Recipients have the opportunity to fulfill their dreams of higher education

PHOENIX--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- As the region’s leading provider in inpatient, outpatient, trauma and emergency care for children, Phoenix Children’s Hospital recognizes the need for well-trained and well-educated staff. In an effort to support higher education options for today’s health care workforce, five Phoenix Children’s Hospital employees recently received full-tuition scholarships to pursue their bachelor’s or master’s degrees through a joint effort with University of Phoenix.

“The growth of Phoenix Children’s Hospital to one of the largest children’s hospitals in the country is in large part due to the dedication of its doctors, nurses and health administration staff,” said Connie Ford, vice president of Professional Practice, Phoenix Children’s Hospital (Master of Health Administration, 2005, University of Phoenix). “Recognizing increasing demands on today’s health care system, we are proud to offer our staff the opportunity to expand their education through this scholarship opportunity provided by University of Phoenix.”

This year’s scholarship recipients include:

  • Kristine Reynolds – Cardiovascular Technologist
    • Selected program: Master of Health Administration with a concentration in Sustainability Management
  • Tiffany Sylvester – Radiology Registered Nurse
    • Selected program: Master of Science in Nursing/Family Nurse Practitioner specialization
  • Zachary Villanueva – Registered Nurse/Interim Clinical Supervisor
    • Selected program: Master of Science in Nursing/Nurse Administration
  • Janice Voegtlin – Clinical Nurse II
    • Selected program: Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • Amy Whitford – Administrative Assistant
    • Selected program: Master of Business Administration

All recipients cited the ability to learn new skills in order to better serve others when describing why they were pursing higher education. They spoke of the importance of working to achieve Phoenix Children’s Hospital's vision, emphasizing excellence in clinical care, service and communication.

“Well-trained doctors, nurses and administrative staff are critical to a thriving health care system and better patient outcomes,” said Doris Savron, executive dean of the University of Phoenix® College of Health Professions. “We join Phoenix Children’s Hospital in congratulating this year’s scholarship recipients and are pleased to support them as they take this important educational step.”

This is the fourth year University of Phoenix has worked with Phoenix Children’s Hospital to provide scholarships. Since the launch of the scholarship program, 16 full-tuition scholarships have been granted to recipients employed at the hospital. Scholarship recipients were selected by a committee consisting of representatives from University of Phoenix and Phoenix Children's Hospital, and were chosen based on a series of essay submissions detailing their educational goals, commitment to making a difference in health care, and personal reflections about why they were ideal scholarship candidates.

Dixie Love, a 2013 recipient of the Phoenix Children’s Hospital Scholarship, used the scholarship to complete her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at University of Phoenix. Working as a registered nurse in the pediatric intensive care unit at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, she credits the opportunity with strengthening her clinical care skillset and enhancing leadership traits that help her to provide the highest level of patient care.

“Receiving the scholarship was a significant accomplishment,” said Dixie Love, RN, BSN, Phoenix Children’s Hospital. “It made my decision to go back to school an easy one. I am happy that several of my colleagues are also taking advantage of this scholarship.”
