Financial Industry Grows by 10,000 Jobs in February

The financial activities industry saw an increase in employment with the addition of 10,000 jobs for the month of February, according to the latest employment numbers from the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics released on Friday, March 6, 2015.

February's growth represents a 12 percent increase in overall employment for the financial activities supersector. The industry now sits at 8,081,000 financial jobs for February with an unemployment rate of 3.1 percent, a mere 0.1 percent lower than the month previous. Over the last 12 months, the unemployment rate dropped 1.1 percentage points from 4.2 percent in February 2014.

Over two-thirds of job growth within the financial activities supersector occurred within the finance and insurance sector, which grew by 6,900 jobs with an unemployment rate of 2.6 percent. Over the last 12 months, finance and insurance has contributed 96,800 jobs to the financial industry's overall employment gain of 150,000 jobs, or roughly 64.5 percent. Gains also occurred within the real estate, rental and leasing sector which grew by 3,600 jobs.

Across all industries, total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 295,000 in February, while the unemployment rate edged down to 5.5 percent. Job gains primarily occurred within food services and drinking places, professional and business services, construction, health care, and in transportation and warehousing.

After revisions, total nonfarm payroll employment for the month of December remained at 329,000 jobs while employment numbers were revised for the month of January, from 257,000 to 239,000. With these revisions, employment gains in December and January were 18,000 lower than previously reported. Over the past 3 months, job gains have averaged 288,000 per month.
