Dow technologies spanning the automotive, electronics, packaging, energy and consumer markets reach the final round of R&D Magazine’s R&D 100 Awards

MIDLAND, Mich.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- R&D Magazine named products of The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW) finalists for the 2016 R&D 100 Awards, recognizing new product innovations introduced in 2015. Fifteen Dow technologies are among the 300 finalists, and three of these products are finalists in two categories.

Often referred to as the “Oscars of Invention” the annual R&D 100 Awards celebrate the most significant technology inventions of the past year. Dow has once again been highlighted as a leading innovator with a wide range of solutions; from long-term metal packaging solutions for cans, to longer-lasting and reliable LED lighting, to innovations that curb tax fraud in petroleum product usage.

“Having 15 technologies recognized by R&D Magazine, including three from our Dow Corning subsidiary, is a testament to the strength and diversity of the Dow innovation engine,” said A.N. Sreeram, senior R&D vice president and chief technology officer. “Innovation is critical to our growth strategy and we are very excited to be expanding our innovation power as we integrate our capabilities and technology toolbox with that of Dow Corning to address critical world challenges.”

Dow technologies, recognized by R&D 100, were developed as market-focused solutions, addressing key customer challenges in a more sustainable way. The Dow finalists were selected for exemplary accomplishments in either mechanical devices/materials, process/prototyping, or analytical testing categories, or special recognition awards.

This year’s nominations include:

Consumer Solutions

  • BETAFORCE™ 2817 Structural Adhesive joins composites and other dissimilar materials enabling innovative lightweight vehicle designs.
  • CTO™ 2000 Trimming Overcoat is a spin-on photoresist trim overcoat, a chemical post-treatment used in semiconductor manufacturing to create smaller features on silicon wafers than photolithography can do alone.
  • IKONIC™ 4100 Polishing Pads are a series of polishing pads for chemical mechanical planarization (CMP), optimized for performance in the fabrication of integrated circuits in the most advanced 14nm/10nm/7nm Logic and Memory technology nodes.
  • Dow Corning® TC-3040 Thermal Gel delivers a silicone-based thermal management solution for advanced semiconductor devices. It improves heat dissipation capability in high performance computing applications using a new proprietary filler technology.
  • Dow Corning® 3rd Gen HRI Liquid Encapsulants for LED lighting offer enhanced photo-thermal stability and improved reliability, reduce piece to piece color variation, and therefore extend the lifetime of LED lighting systems.
  • Dow Corning® 3901 Liquid Satin Blend is a high molecular weight polymer in dimethicone that features a novel rheology and distinctive sensory profile for use in skin care, color cosmetics and hair care applications. This product is in the running for a special recognition award in the market disruptor category.

Infrastructure Solutions

  • CANVERA™ Polyolefin Dispersions provides progressive food and beverage brand owners with the next long-term can coating alternative that eliminates materials traditionally found in epoxy or alternative coating systems which are of concern for many consumers. In addition to being a finalist in the Mechanical / Materials category, CANVERA is also a finalist for a special recognition award for market disruptor products.
  • PARALOID™ Edge Isocyanate-Free Technology offers a first in solvent-borne two-component urethane technology; a high performance, ambient crosslinking system that is isocyanate-free, formaldehyde free, and decouples cure time from pot life. PARALOID is in the running for a special recognition award in the market disruptor category.
  • ACCENT™ Wax Inhibitors deliver unparalleled flow assurance performance to petroleum producers by using technology designed to control and prevent waxy crystal formation, providing the right fluid flow in an environmentally friendly way. They replace antiquated solvent-based systems with a sustainable aqueous-based affordable chemistry solution. ACCENT is a finalist in the Mechanical / Materials category as well as a special recognition award for green technology.
  • Flexible Acrylic Resin (FAR) is a blendable polymer for injection molding, extrusion, calendering or film-blowing in applications requiring low stress whitening, flexibility, UV resistance, and excellent ink and paint adhesion.

Performance Plastics

  • Dow AGILITY™ Performance LDPE is designed for high speed low gauge processing. With enhanced and globally available process technology, AGILITY™ addresses the most stringent industry requirements, offering a suitable substitute to extrusion coating materials.
  • MOR-FREE™ L PLUS 1 High Efficiency Solventless Adhesives are suitable for a variety of flexible food packaging applications. With a long mixed pot life (as long as 30 minutes) and fast cure technology, MOR-FREE™ L PLUS 1 offers excellent bonding to numerous substrates with enhanced resistance to pressure and puncturing.
  • RETAIN™ Polymer Modifiers help make clearer packages, maintain mechanical properties and significantly reduce gels in films produced from barrier film recycle streams. RETAIN is a finalist in the Process / Prototyping category as well as a special recognition award for green technology.

Performance Materials & Chemicals

  • ACCUTRACE™ S10 Molecular Fuel Marker empowers governments to curb tax fraud by authenticating petroleum products for their intended use (such as agriculture and home heating) and prevent them being sold into higher taxed uses (such as vehicles for road transport) with a chemistry highly resistant to removal through known fuel laundering techniques.

Agricultural Sciences

  • Paradigm™ WG Herbicide with Arylex™ Active is a novel herbicide with a broadened spectrum of hard-to-control weeds in cereal crops such as wheat and barley. It combines several chemistries with Dow AgroSciences’ GoDri™ formulation that disperses rapidly and completely when diluted to enable faster, easier applications.

In 2015, seven Dow technologies were named R&D 100 award winners, receiving more awards than any other company that year. Dow Corning also received an award for its Silicone Adhesive Technology. This year’s winners will be announced at the annual black-tie awards dinner on November 3 in Washington, D.C.
