PHILADELPHIA, May 27, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --

Comprehensive training program helps nursing students transition from classroom to practice by giving access to 1,200 skills across entire nursing curriculum

Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, has launched Clinical Skills, a new comprehensive online training program to help nursing students master practical skills across the entire nursing curriculum.

Based on Elsevier's Mosby's Skills for clinicians, Clinical Skills is specifically adapted for the needs of nursing students before they enter the clinical environment. The suite of products includes more than 1,200 evidence-based and standardized skills across 10 disciplines in one consistent format to allow nursing programs to teach and evaluate skills by employing the same training tools that are used by nurses in practice today.

"The transition between the classroom and practice is critical for students and their future employers," said John Danaher, President, Elsevier Education. "This skills mastery product addresses the need with learner-friendly tools such as videos and quizzes to give students a solid understanding of how things are done in a clinical environment. It helps future nurses develop critical clinical thinking and prepares them to enter the workforce with confidence."

Ten collections span the entire nursing curriculum and include such disciplines as Nursing Fundamentals, Health Assessment, Emergency, Respiratory Care, Mental Health, Neonatal, Perioperative, Maternal Newborn, Oncology, Pediatric and Critical Care. Each collection offers a consistent, 360-degree look at numerous nursing skills to ensure a thorough understanding of how to perform each skill safely and effectively.

Each skill features a consistent seven-part framework to guide students through all aspects of the skill. Learning is optimized with easy-to-use tools such as the following:

  • High-definition videos and 3D animations that demonstrate each step of the skill;
  • Quick Sheets that provide a brief summary of the most critical aspects of the skill;
  • Illustrations that offer detailed diagrams and pictures to supplement skill instruction;
  • An interactive supply list that visually familiarizes students with related equipment.

Teachers will find competency checklists and interactive quizzes for each skill helpful to evaluate student progress.

Competency-based learning of Clinical Skills supports standard Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) nursing competencies and student evaluation. Content for every skill in each collection stems from a combination of Elsevier texts, clinical skills experts, and various nursing organizations such as the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, Oncology Nurses Society, and American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition. Clinical skills experts review and revise the content annually to reflect changes in practice as they arise.
