Con Edison Met Record Demand for Power as Summer Heat, Humidity Hit Region

Investments, Work of Crews Kept Power Flowing

September 8, 2016 1:09 PM EDT

NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwired) -- 09/08/16 -- Con Edison customers set a record for power consumption during the year's two hottest months, using 13.29 million megawatt hours to run their homes and businesses in July and August.

The previous record for usage in a two-month period was 13.26 million megawatt hours set in July and August of 2010.

"We use technology and the expertise of our engineers and operators to guide our investments in our underground and overhead electric delivery systems," said Patrick McHugh, Con Edison's vice president, Engineering and Planning. "Those investments, along with the excellent work of our field crews, helped us keep the power flowing during another New York summer."

Con Edison invested $1.6 billion in its electric delivery systems to prepare for the summer of 2016 and has invested $1 billion each year since at least 2005. The investments go into cables, transformers, switches and all the other equipment that ensures reliability in one of the world's most complex energy delivery systems.

Con Edison is in the final year of a $1 billion storm hardening plan it started after Hurricane Sandy to protect infrastructure and customers from the impact of severe weather events.

The energy company also created a new underground electric network to help meet growing energy needs on the west side of Midtown Manhattan, particularly with the development of the massive Hudson Yards residential and commercial complex.

In addition, the energy company relies on customers to take advantage of its energy efficiency programs (http://coned.com/energyefficiency/) and to consider solar energy (http://www.coned.com/dg/solarenergy/) and other forms of distributed generation. These measures by customers help Con Edison maintain its industry leading reliability when temperatures soar and the need for air conditioning rises.

Con Edison's 3.4 million customers in New York City and Westchester County set a couple of other records for usage this summer. Demand reached 11,855 megawatts at 4 p.m. on Aug. 13, which was a new high for a weekend day. At 6 p.m. the next day, demand reached 11,669 megawatts, a new record for a Sunday.

Con Edison is a subsidiary of Consolidated Edison, Inc. (NYSE: ED), one of the nation's largest investor-owned energy companies, with approximately $13 billion in annual revenues and $47 billion in assets. The utility provides electric, gas and steam service to customers in New York City and Westchester County, N.Y.
