Canadian Energy wins Game Changer Award for Solar PV Project of the Year for powering the first off-grid aircraft hangar at the Brantford Municipal Airport in Ontario. The project was announced as the 2016 winner at the Game Changer Awards Gala presented by Canadian Solar Industries Association (CanSIA) May 16 in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

The Brantford aircraft hangar features a lightweight and portable building structure that covers 40,000 square feet with a 50 kW solar PV rooftop system, integrated directly onto the roofing. Canadian Energy used a load-shifting battery and power control system, packaged in a shipping container, to permit 100 per cent off-grid power in the building, with diesel backup available.

Craig Ballard CEO says the Brantford hangar is a prototype but "positions Canada as a leader in the global race in adapting PV to remote settings."

Few incentives exist for installing solar energy in Canada's remote settings yet the need for reliable diesel-independent power remains high. Head of Solar Ship's Power Camps division, Lewis Reford says, "his successful project offers a template for cutting our operational reliance on fossil fuels and it should convince other builders to incorporate PV power in their top level design requirements."

The PV Project of the Year was awarded based on the following criteria:

-- Innovative or creative approach
-- Corporate responsibility
-- Economic benefit
-- Client centric approach
-- Engagement

About Solar Ship Inc.:

Solar Ship develops hybrid aircrafts to serve cut-off places. The aircraft uses two forms of lift to augment its payload capacity: buoyant lift from lighter-than-air gas, combined with the aerodynamic lift of a wing. Combining a hybrid wing design with electric propulsion, the aircraft can fly large loads over long distances without the use of fossil fuels, making Solar Ship a preferred partner for accessing remote areas. Solar Ship's Power Camps division deploys similar self-reliant technology in building-integrated form. For more information, please visit http://www.solarship.com.
