The Broad Institute was founded in 2003 and launched in 2004 by MIT, Harvard, and the Broad Foundations to be a new kind of research institution aimed at propelling the transformation of medicine by empowering a new generation of scientists to work together to apply powerful new technologies and approaches to the understanding and treatment of disease. Declared a success by its founders after only four years, Eli and Edythe Broad announced in 2008 their intent to endow the institute, enabling it to transition to a permanent non-profit research institution -- with its own board of directors -- in July 2009. Today, Broad brings together more than 100 faculty and over 1500 scientists from across MIT, Harvard, and the Harvard-affiliated hospitals -- and beyond -- to tackle ambitious and important challenges in biomedicine.
Members of the Broad Institute Board of Directors are appointed for three-year terms.
