Throwback Thursday 1950s – Thursday, July 2

New to Get Pop-Cultured this year, and the cornerstone of the Get Pop-Cultured campaign, customers are invited to Barnes & Noble every Thursday in July for a nostalgic journey through the most iconic moments in pop culture from the 1950s through the 1990s. During the first Throwback Thursday event, celebrating the 1950s on Thursday, July 2, customers are encouraged to explore the dynamic influence that books, toys, games, music, movies, TV and fashion had on society during the time period by viewing a specially crafted Throwback Thursday Display Wall that features fun facts, images, products and more that influenced the decade and brings it to life. The display is the perfect opportunity for customers to take pictures to share on social media, using the hashtags #TBT and #GetPopCultured.

Customers are also invited to participate in fun themed activities including a special 1950s-style Hula Hoop Contest (since the hula hoop craze first swept across the U.S. in the 1950s), and much more. Customers should contact their local Barnes & Noble for more details on what events will be taking place to celebrate the 1950s.

To round out the fun, there will also be Deals of the Decade, special offers and giveaways for Throwback Thursday 1950s. These include The Borrowers by Mary Norton, which was one of the most popular books for young readers in the 1950s, available in a Barnes & Noble exclusive edition for its original published price of only $2.50 (discount offer is valid on July 2 only, while supplies last). In addition, Doctor Dan the Bandage Man by Helen Gaspard will available for its original price of only $.25 in-stores only on July 2. Doctor Dan the Bandage Man had one of the largest print runs of a Little Golden Book at its time, due to its incredible popularity with parents and kids, and featured one of the first book & product combinations on the market (it came with Band-Aids). It is now featured in the Smithsonian’s permanent collection.

Also available during Throwback Thursday 1950s is a select NOOK Book® from the time period at an incredible value: Hondo by Louis L’Amour priced at $1.99, for a limited time only. Barnes & Noble will also have the vinyl albums Kind of Blue by Miles Davis and Lady in Satin by Billie Holiday available for sale. Special candy treats from the time period are also available for purchase. In addition, there will be a giveaway of The Borrowers book cover (while supplies last).

  • Magic Tree House: Dinosaurs Before Dark Saturday, July 4, at 10am

On Saturday, July 4, at 10am, customers across the country will have the perfect opportunity to start off their July 4 celebration the right way and travel back millions of years with Magic Tree House: Dinosaurs Before Dark. In 1992, Dinosaurs Before Dark, the first book in the Magic Tree House series from Mary Pope Osborne, arrived in stores. Twenty-three years later, it is still the #1 selling book in the series at Barnes & Noble, and with Jurassic World now in theaters, there is no better time to celebrate dinosaurs than with our Magic Tree House: Dinosaurs Before Dark event.

The event is the perfect opportunity for families heading to the beach on July 4 to have a prehistoric adventure by making Barnes & Noble their first stop. Young paleontologists can explore the age of dinosaurs with fascinating facts, giveaways, special offers and fun activities like making their own paleontologist hat, drawing their ideal dinosaur, creating their own dinosaur name and much more.

Special offers available during the Dinosaurs Before Dark event include buy two get the third free on all Magic Tree House books and Prehistoric Predators by Brian Switek and illustrated by Julius Csotonyi at a special value of $10.00 (regularly priced at $19.95). Giveaways include a “Travel Through Time with Magic Tree House” Activity Passport featuring activities that tie into a selection of Magic Tree House books and an Audio Drop Card that includes a code for downloading Magic Tree House audio excerpts. Attendees can also enter for a chance to win a Magic Tree House Canvas Tote Bag raffle prize, which includes one copy of Dinosaurs Before Dark full-color hardcover edition and one Dinosaur Glow-in-the-Dark Model Kit.

Outlander – Sunday, July 5, at 2pm

On Sunday, July 5, at 2pm, all Barnes & Noble customers are invited to be transported to the intriguing world of the popular Outlander series with trivia, giveaways and more. Fans can discuss the bestselling book series by Diana Gabaldon, including the screen version of Outlander that just wrapped up its first season and has introduced a whole new audience to the story.

Barnes & Noble is offering fans of the book and of the show a unique opportunity to get together with other fans and discuss the series. The spirited discussion will center around key topics including how customers first discovered the series, who recommended Outlander to them, what their thoughts are on the TV series and so much more. The Outlander event is designed to get these conversations going, with a special discussion about the books and its screen version that will include trivia questions and explore the interesting information included in The Outlandish Companion book written by Diana Gabaldon.

Featured offers during the event include 40% off the Outlander audiobook (the first title in the series) and the opportunity to enter for the chance to win a prize pack consisting of an Outlander Season 1, Vol 1 DVD, a copy of The Outlandish Companion and an Outlander Starz poster.

In addition, Barnes & Noble is thrilled to announce a special Twitter Chat with Outlander author Diana Gabaldon that is scheduled for Sunday, July 5, at 2pm EST. Customers are encouraged to join in @BNBuzz on Twitter or use #BNOutlanderChat to participate.

Fans can tweet their Outlander questions to Diana Gabaldon using #BNOutlanderChat. Barnes & Noble’s social media team will deliver those questions directly to the author who will answer a selection of them during her live chat on July 5.
