Author Mariam Bint Ali has watched the people of Iraq the Iraqi Jews, Christians, Muslims, Yazidis, and many other humans with different faiths once living in harmony, pay a heavy price for the policy of divide and rule.

She tells one such story in her new book, "I, an Iraqi: The Trials and Triumphs of a Patriot's Daughter" (published by Partridge Singapore), which explores "a country brought down on its knees in the name of democracy, the injustice and cruelty of some people in power."

The author feels readers will appreciate her book "because it takes them on (a) journey into the rich old life of Baghdad and allows them to witness firsthand what the Iraqi nation had to suffer."

An excerpt from "I, an Iraqi":
As the light summer breeze oscillated between the translucent white curtains, the old pine tree outside the window swayed in rhythm to her gentle voice. The afternoon sunlight filtered through the window, sprinkling a golden glow onto a lifetime of memorabilia. Taste, serenity, refinement and a sense of orderly calm engulfed the drawing room, finally permeating an aura of stability and permanence to a lifetime of endless journeys. Beneath our feet lay exquisitely-designed rare Persian carpets, gifts from the late King Abdul-Aziz Bin Saud. The twinkling, smiling eyes behind the spectacles gave no indication of all the horror and sorrow they had been witness to, or of the collective punishment of a family that had lived for generations in Iraq, tracing their ancestry back to the prophets who blessed their holy land.
