Author Frederick G. Giel weaves a compelling tale that captures both the fragility of life and the resilience of children in "Willowgate Park" (published by Xlibris). Set in fictional towns on the Susquehanna River, the author uses a potent mixture of emotion, warmth and intrigue, to take readers on an orphan's journey of pain and perseverance. Told through the eyes of colorful characters in small-town America during the idyllic 1950s, the book delivers a rollercoaster ride not soon forgotten.

On a quiet cul-de-sac near Stonington's town center, innocent horseplay leads to the death of a little boy, devastating a community and breaking the will of Eddie Brooks. Ostracized by his community and rescued by a foster family in Chestnut Ridge, a town far in the distance on the other side of the wide river, Eddie grows and blossoms, but there are still unsettled issues to confront in Stonington. Returning as an adult to face his demons, Eddie discovers the otherworldly assistance that has been at his beck and call all along. Will he successfully traverse this personal path to self-forgiveness?

"Although life can be fragile and fate can deliver crushing blows, the human spirit is resilient, even in the case of children," Giel says. "The book tells the story of the tragic consequences of childish exuberance, doing so in a narrative that rips at the heart."

In a nutshell, "Willowgate Park" is a story of survival, presented in an entertaining way with engaging characters and intriguing plotlines. It reminds readers of the brittleness of life and the human capacity to overcome adversity.
