(PRWEB) March 20, 2010 -- Western States Chiropractic College announces its transition to the University of Western States. This name change represents a transition of the former college to university status, creating the opportunity to offer new programs of study, additional advanced degrees, and expanded research opportunities.
The University of Western States will continue to offer its current programs, including its flagship four-year program leading to a Doctor of Chiropractic degree as well as a one-year certificate program in massage therapy.
In the next few years, the University of Western States will add new academic and continuing education offerings that will complement existing programs and create a more diversified curriculum for students who are pursuing careers in integrated health care professions. The first of these new programs will be a master’s degree in exercise and sports science to be launched in April 2010.
"Chiropractic and massage therapy represent only a portion of integrated health care career choices available to students today," said Dr. Joseph Brimhall, UWS President. “By expanding upon those programs, offering additional courses of study, and transitioning to university status, the University of Western States becomes a more diversified and well-rounded health care institution.”
The University of Western States will adopt its new name immediately, and will transition its website, signs, and other materials in the next few months.
The University of Western States was founded in 1904 in Portland, Oregon. UWS offers academic programs in integrated health care practices including chiropractic and massage therapy. In addition, UWS runs several local clinics where senior interns and professional practitioners provide a variety of integrated health care services to patients.

The 2010 show highlighted three main themes: Complete Bicycles, Bicycle Parts and Accessories, and Light Electric Vehicles (LEV’s). With growing interest on environmental issues LEV’s have skyrocketed in importance and TAIPEI CYCLE 2010 accommodated twice as much floor space as last year to this new boom segment.
The Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), chief organizer of the show conducted an array of supporting events, including the International Bicycle Design Competition (IDBC) Award Ceremony, Taipei Power Forum-2010 LEV Symposium, an International Bicycle Trend Forum, Taiwan Cycle Night, an outdoor cycling test ride area, and a special exhibit of entries for the IDBC and the Innovative Products Competition Award.
International Bicycle Design Awards
The Grand Prize of the 14th IBDC went to Taiwanese industrial designer Hsi Huang for his 'Shopping Bike', a folding bike that transforms into a shopping cart. The judges were impressed with the convenience and functionality of Huang's concept. The designer walked away with a cash prize of NT$500,000. The total prize fund this year was NT$1.175m. The symposium explored future trends in the LEV industry looking at international markets, regulations and environmental standards. Auxiliary programs included an EnergyBus and Power Lithium Ion Battery workshop.
Taiwan A-Team
Taiwan’s A-Team meeting eyed rising labour cost in China as a critical element to maintain long term success. Taiwan’s bike industry leaders and affiliated sponsor members, met on Thursday 18th and the discussions centred on the rising cost factors of wages and workers benefits in mainland China factories.
Yin Ming Yang, chairman of the TBEA urged the industry to invest in working conditions and thus increase efficiency. Other factors important for sustained growth include brand orientation, continued investment into R+D and investing in other production markets like Vietnam or Cambodia.
Tour de Taiwan
Taiwan’s growth in general cycling might see another strong boost as Pat McQuaid, President of the UCI paid his first ever visit to the Taipei Cycle Show and for a meeting with Taiwan’s President Ma. TAITRA and the Chinese Taipei Cycling Association have teamed up to host the 22nd Tour de Taiwan, an annual around-the-nation professional cycling race that is part of the UCI’s Asia Tour. The seven-leg event started Sunday, March 14 and coincides with the closing day of the exhibition on Saturday, March 20 at Taipei City Hall. Overall winner went to David McCann from Ireland, member of the Giant Asia Racing Team. The team ranking saw the Hong Kong Team on first place, followed by the Japan National Team and the Giant Asia Racing Team.
Comments
King Liu, President of Giant was very happy with the number and quality of business contacts. Hermes Chang, President of Ideal Bikes has strong confidence in positive market dynamics and sees the show as an important platform for the industry to meet.
Shimano’s Taiwan manager Francis Sin reported an increase in foreign visitor contacts from both Europe and the US at their booth.
Industry newcomers, like China Motor Corporation (CMC), with 900m US$ turnover in 2009 Taiwan’s second largest automobile assembler and distributor (Mitsubishi) used TAIPEI CYCLE to launch their entry in to the bicycle, e-bike and e-scooter segment. Leon Liao, GM of GreenTrans, the bicycle division of CMC, noted: “Our main intention was to first introduce the brand and set up distributor network around the world. A strong second focus was on ODM clients to apply our proprietary technology to various markets. Main interest came from Europe and Japan for both our standard and e- bike program.”
Also for the first time the French Trade Commission, UBI France organized a French Pavilion. For starters 13 French companies, such as Time Sport International, Corima, Carnac, Selcof, and Stronglight added some ‘savoir roulez’ to the show.
Aurelien Brunet, Zefal Sales and Marketing Manager commented on increased contacts and the general positive mood. For Carine Chambres, Sales staff at Oredon the show was important to follow up on discussions the company conducted in last Decembers Taichung meetings.
“Business was excellent,” in a short sentence that’s the statement from Greet Engelen, speaking on behalf of 29 companies represented in the combined Coliped booth. She especially commented on many new contacts made, and a solid appointments schedule of the participating European brands like Schwalbe, Selle royal, Fulcrum or Gepida, the first ever Hungarian company exhibiting at Taipei Cycle Show.
For Frank Surmann, JD/TransX Sales Manager Europe it was especially noticeable that there was more interest coming from other Asian countries like India. The brands strong presence in Europe mend that he also saw most of the European product managers.

MANTECA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- SSJID’s General Manager Jeff Shields, has advised the SSJID Board of Directors that a lawsuit filed by a coalition of local publicly-owned utilities from throughout California may help to clarify the potential impact of Proposition 16 on SSJID’s plan to provide electric service.
The lawsuit was filed in Sacramento County Superior Court on March 18, 2010 by the Sacramento Municipal Utility District, San Francisco Local Agency Formation Commission, City and County of San Francisco, City of Moreno Valley, City of Redding, California Municipal Utilities Associations, San Joaquin Valley Power Authority, Modesto Irrigation District and Merced Irrigation District and seeks to disqualify Proposition 16 from the June ballot on the alleged grounds that it is false and misleading and fails to accurately state its true nature and purpose.
Proposition 16 is a Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) funded initiative on the June ballot which would amend the state constitution to require publicly-owned electric utilities and community choice aggregators to hold an election and obtain approval by a two-thirds vote prior to providing electric service in competition with PG&E.
The lawsuit states that, “The title of the initiative - “The Taxpayers Right to Vote Act” - is false and misleading in that it misrepresents that Proposition 16 is a measure to control taxes, borrowing, and public spending, but the creation or expansion of Public Owned Utility’s and Community Choice Aggregation’s do not constitute special taxes, nor do they have anything to do with taxes, borrowing, or government spending, and the petition concerns only a proposal to impose a two-thirds majority vote requirement for the creation or expansion of Public Owned Utility’s and Community Choice Aggregation.” The public agencies that filed the action have asked the court to order Proposition 16 removed from the ballot.
SSJID, while not a participant in the litigation, believes that the complaint contains information that may help clarify the potential impact of Proposition 16 on SSJID’s plan to provide electric service.
In late 2009, SSJID submitted an application to the San Joaquin Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCo) for authority to provide electric service to the residents of Manteca, Ripon and Escalon. If SSJID’s application is approved, it will cut retail electricity rates in its service territory by 15 percent across the board.
The Board of Directors of SSJID has considered the impact of Proposition 16 on District operations and concluded that its passage would adversely impact proposed District efforts to provide retail electric service.
Under current law, SSJID’s plan to provide electric service requires approval by vote of its Board of Directors, which is comprised of elected public officials, and must also be approved by vote of the San Joaquin LAFCo, which is also comprised of elected public officials, following receipt of a report from the California Public Utilities Commission. In addition, should the District seek to annex additional territory to serve any new customer outside SSJID’s existing service territory, who prefers service from SSJID rather than PG&E, SSJID would have to obtain the prior approval of voters before it could provide such service.
Proposition 16 would impose an additional new requirement and prohibit publicly owned utilities, including SSJID, from offering electric service in competition with PG&E unless, in addition to all of the approvals required under existing law, SSJID also obtains prior approval from voters by two-thirds super-majority vote.
PG&E in contrast, is not required to obtain any comparable approvals from elected public officials or voters prior to providing electric service in a new territory or expanding its system to serve additional new customers. And the requirements of Proposition 16 would not apply to PG&E.
A copy of the complaint can be found at http://www.sfcityattorney.org/.
