Arizona Public Service Company Expands PCI Software Platform for the California ISO Energy Imbalance Market

October 14, 2015 11:16 AM EDT

NORMAN, Okla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Arizona Public Service Company (APS) has initiated a significant expansion of its existing PCI platform to prepare for the California ISO Energy Imbalance Market (EIM). PCI will provide APS with all major system upgrades to fully participate in CAISO EIM. The system upgrades include the EIM software platform that will fully support all APS bid-to-bill and scheduling needs for marketing and trading activities and balancing authority operations. In addition, PCI will upgrade the existing PCI optimization system to be fully compliant with CAISO EIM modeling needs and augment APS outage management systems to communicate with CAISO systems. A major part of the implementation will also replace APS existing Energy Accounting, Meter Data Management, and Transmission Billing solutions to support market entry into CAISO EIM.

APS EIM Program Manager Phil McLaughlin noted, “APS is partnering with PCI and incorporating them into our existing project team to cover all aspects of system upgrades needed for CAISO EIM. PCI will support all of our Balancing Authority and Marketing & Trading Operations in the CAISO EIM. We have successfully worked with PCI in past projects and fully expect that success to continue for our CAISO EIM participation.”

The PCI CAISO EIM system is a complete bid-to-bill solution that provides benefits to EIM Entities, Transmission Service Providers, Entity Scheduling Coordinators, and Participating Resource Scheduling Coordinators. Not only will the PCI system enable participants to engage in the market but, with its embedded analytics, customers will be able to improve operations over time through forward-looking optimization strategies and post-analysis.

“We are proud of our past success with APS across multiple projects and are looking to incorporate an even tighter implementation team for CAISO EIM. Because APS is familiar with the PCI platform and PCI is familiar with the APS portfolio, we will work together as one team to implement the upgrades for CAISO EIM. This is the type of customer involvement with our system that we strive to achieve with all our customers,” said Jason Kram, PCI’s Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer.
