SANTA CLARA, Calif., Nov. 2, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Applied Micro Circuits Corporation (Nasdaq: AMCC), a global leader in data center computing and connectivity solutions, and China Unicom Labs, a telecommunications leader in China and the world's fourth largest mobile service provider, today announced a joint testing verification program intended to reduce data center infrastructure acquisition and operational costs.

Competitive pressures require China Unicom to make significant investments on an ongoing basis to acquire and operate leading-edge IT infrastructure solutions to power its data communications and Internet services lines of business. Reductions in hardware or operational costs become significant at the scale deployed by China Unicom.

"We believe that AppliedMicro's X-Gene® Server on a Chip® solution will provide savings across our compute and storage infrastructure," said Bingyi Fang, director of cloud infrastructure research at China Unicom Labs. "To remain a leader in our chosen markets, it is important for us to evaluate all of the newest, most compelling enterprise-class technologies."

China Unicom Labs and AppliedMicro are optimizing performance across a variety of workloads utilizing X-Gene-based platforms. The objective is to achieve the lowest possible TCO in both data center storage and compute platforms running open-source enterprise workloads including the CentOS operating system, KVM hypervisor and OpenStack.

"X-Gene's architecture, featuring a solid balance of compute, memory and I/O coupled with power-efficiency and cost-effectiveness, offers benefits across a broad range of workloads ranging from cold storage to web serving and in-memory databases," said Paramesh Gopi, President and Chief Executive Officer of AppliedMicro. "Partnering with an industry leader like China Unicom Labs demonstrates the value of ARM-based solutions running real workloads in web scale operating environments."
