Application for Online Lobbying and Reporting Helps South Carolina Receive an “A” for Transparency

September 11, 2015 9:00 AM EDT

COLUMBIA, S.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- South Carolina was recently awarded an “A” grade rating for their transparency in lobbying activity from the Sunlight Foundation. Few states received this “A” rating, and every state was evaluated based on the following five criteria: Lobbying Activity, Expenditure Transparency, Expenditure Reporting Thresholds, Document Accessibility, and Lobbyist Compensation. South Carolina, along with Massachusetts, received the highest attainable total score of 6.

The Lobbying and Reporting system services over 900 lobbyists and lobbyist’s principals in the state of South Carolina. All lobbyists and lobbyist’s principals are required by law in South Carolina to register with the State Ethics Commission annually and file disclosure reports electronically twice a year. This application improves government transparency by making the information immediately available to the public to query, view, download, and print. In 2014, the State Ethics Commission partnered with SC.gov to make the Public Disclosure and Accountability Reporting Application mobile-friendly. South Carolina’s electronic filing program is administered by the State Ethics Commission and was created and is maintained at no cost through a partnership between the State Ethics Commission and SC.gov.
