Melissa Cronn, Administrator, Austin CyberKnife, Lorri Smith, RN, BSN, Director Clinical Services, Alliance Oncology, and Cynthia Kelsey Winker, RN, PhD, Senior Vice President Operations, Alliance Oncology, were the authors whose poster presentation, The Fusion of Clinical and Business Metrics: How They Unite to Improve Quality and Effect Change, was accepted by the society. The presentation showcases how the development of a standardized database of clinical and business metrics allows Alliance Oncology centers to measure, analyze and improve patient care and operational efficiency—to thrive in a highly competitive industry.

“We are building a collaborative environment and it all starts with having a huge reserve of clinical data at our fingertips,” said Cynthia Kelsey Winker, RN, PhD, Senior Vice President Operations, Alliance Oncology. “With that information comes the power to improve processes, determine and refine best practices, set standards, and, ultimately, drive the best patient experiences and outcomes.”

To develop this standardized measurement system and metrics, Alliance Oncology created a multidisciplinary committee including clinical, operational, information technology and business development specialists. The committee looked at all the metrics of their business and reviewed questions asked by the executive team regarding their patients and their communities. The committee had specialists analyze their area of expertise and generate a list of key data elements. After compiling the data elements, the committee filtered out duplicates and made note of overlapping data. In addition, a set of standardized definitions and common language for each data set was developed to assure consistency in reporting. The committee worked with a software engineer to build an integrated database that brought all of the data together into a connected and usable format. The committee then assessed data sets, looking for opportunities for both clinical and operational improvement.

After completing two case studies, one that showed an increase in market share that contributed to a 12% revenue growth and one that decreased the time from patient scan to first treatment by 20%, the internally developed database was considered a success for Alliance Oncology. By developing a method of collecting, measuring, and using their data effectively, the company improved patient care and business results.

American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO) is the essential professional society for success in the day-to-day practice of radiation oncology. ACRO strives to ensure the highest quality care for radiation therapy patients and promote success in the practice of radiation oncology through education, responsible socioeconomic advocacy, and integration of science and technology into clinical practice.

Two types of presentations are accepted by the society: oral and poster. In order to present, authors first have to submit a written abstract about their topic of choice. ACRO then reviews the abstracts and chooses the ones they want to see presented at the annual meeting.

In addition to the presentation at ACRO, Alliance Oncology’s abstract was also accepted by two other nationally recognized associations in the radiation oncology industry. The abstract will be presented at the “Big Data Workshop: Exploring Opportunities for Radiation Oncology in the Era of Big Data,” co-sponsored by the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), August 13 – 14 in Bethesda, Md. and at the Association of Community Cancer Centers (ACCC) October 21 – 23 in Portland, Ore.
