4G Americas Digs Foundation for 5G

New White Paper Expands on Requirements and Technology Recommendations for 5G

October 8, 2015 12:36 PM EDT

BELLEVUE, WA -- (Marketwired) -- 10/08/15 -- 4G Americas, the industry trade association and voice of 5G for the Americas, today published a new white paper titled, 5G Technology Evolution Recommendations, which expands upon the previously published recommendations in the October 2014 white paper titled, 4G Americas' Recommendations on 5G Requirements and Solutions.

"4G Americas continues to drive the development of 5G in the Americas region through multiple white paper publications over the course of the past two years, hosting 5G events, and participating in government consultations and cooperation agreements with other wireless organizations," stated Chris Pearson, President of 4G Americas. "There's been steady momentum with 5G activity worldwide and 4G Americas continues the progress by offering further key technology recommendations for the future 5G end-to-end system."

The paper, 5G Technology Evolution Recommendations, examines 5G technology requirements including key technology concepts such as:

  • Market drivers and use cases: Internet of Things (IoT), extreme video, Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) sunset, public safety and context-aware services
  • Coexistence of the LTE end-to-end ecosystem with 5G
  • Requirements and regulatory aspects such as low latency, high throughput, mobility on demand, high reliability and resiliency and network flexibility
  • Potential technologies for 5G, including packet core, Radio Access Network (RAN) and aspects applicable to end-to-end 5G systems
  • Spectrum aspects associated with 5G networks including both licensed and unlicensed spectrum options

Brian Daly, Director - Core Network & Government/Regulatory Standards at AT&T and co-leader of the work group that authored the white paper noted, "With 3GPP and ITU's planning for 5G and the upcoming WRC-15 meeting, it's important for the wireless industry to provide key recommendations for an efficient 5G end-to-end system which includes major technology steps both in the radio access network and core network. 4G Americas' new paper contributes greatly to the global work for 5G and builds upon these recommendations as we move closer to the expected standardized commercial deployment of 5G networks in 2020 and beyond."

4G Americas will host a premier event, 5G World North America on November 18-19, 2015 at LTE North America in Dallas. Top industry experts at the summit will explore 5G networks of 2020 and beyond, use cases, technology recommendations, spectrum requirements and innovations as well as the new technology features for LTE and LTE-Advanced that will evolve to 5G.

The white paper, 5G Technology Evolution Recommendations, written collaboratively by members of 4G Americas, is available for free download at www.4gamericas.org. This paper follows 4G Americas' 5G Spectrum Recommendations white paper published in August 2015.
