Behind The Scenes, with host James Earl Jones (Star Wars), plans to present a timely segment about sustainable farming. The recent controversy about genetically modified foods has raised public awareness of many of the issues surrounding current farming practices. Sustainable farming methods provide alternatives to many of the potentially destructive aspects of current methods.

To be considered sustainable, environmental protection, social responsibility, and economic viability must all be taken into consideration when developing farming methods. Water pollution from pesticides and soil erosion are among the environmental issues that can adversely affect biodiversity as well as our food supply. Social responsibility includes ensuring the health and safety of farm workers and the humane treatment of animals. Economic viability includes conserving the natural resources that make food production possible. The program will discuss methods of conserving natural resources, reducing greenhouse gases, and reducing the negative impact of farming on surrounding communities.

Advances in biotechnology, coupled with sustainable farming methods, could result in ending global hunger and starvation, which currently claims approximately 7.5 lives each year. The food industry, government, and farmers face new challenges in providing food for the world's people while preserving the earth. This new program will explore those challenges, as well as present the latest research and scientific discoveries that could lead to lasting solutions.

Created for Public Television, Behind the Scenes is proud to present the best in educational programming about issues that affect our world. It's not released or produced by APT or PBS.
