Hess (HES) Shares Lower as BP Spokesperson Calls Situation at Valhall Field 'Serious'

July 13, 2011 2:21 PM EDT
Hess Corp. (NYSE: HES) shares remain in negative territory despite a modest bounce off session lows. The stock is currently down 0.98 percent to $70.68.

Traders are attributing the weakness to an update from a BP Norway spokesperson following a fire at the North Sea Valhall oilfield earlier this week. The spokesperson called the situation "serious" and said officials are now investigating.

Hess currently owns 64 percent of the Valhall field, while BP holds the remaining 36 percent.
