Dell (DELL) Gets Serious in Quest for Quest Software (QSFT)

July 2, 2012 8:20 AM EDT
Amid reports last week all but affirming the motive, it appears chatter of Dell, Inc. (Nasdaq: DELL) acquiring Quest Software (Nasdaq: QSFT) is getting closer and closer.

Last Wednesday, Quest said it received a bid of $27.50 by an undisclosed party. After evaluation, the bid was said to be "superior" to the current deal it had going with private equity firm Insight Ventures.

Quest had said several bidders expressed interest following the acquisition announcement in March with Insight. Talks between Dell and Quest were also reported to have broken down at the start of June.

Dell has been looking to boost its data-center hardware top-line, mainly through inorganic means of acquisitions. The company has been on the lookout since losing a bidding war with Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) for 3Par in September 2010.

Quest shares have risen 50 percent since the onset of 2012, most of the rise coming following the Match 8th Insight announcement. Shares ended slightly higher at $27.81 last Friday, but are indicated lower Monday.
