Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) shares ended the session on a strong note Monday following reports it might be making a move into cartography.
GigaOm reported that Amazon acquired 3-D mapping start-up UpNext. The move makes sense if Amazon wants to build a stronger presence in the tablet PC sector. Currently, users of its Kindle Fire need to download a third-party app or access a map service via its Internet browser.
Investors include Chris Sacca's Lowercase Capital, David Cohen's Bullet Time Ventures, David Tisch’s Box Group and Paul Sethi's PKS Capital.
Financial terms weren't disclosed, though a price tag in the neighborhood of $2.5 million to $4 million might be possible.
Amazon ended up 0.4 percent better Monday.
