Dow Hits 16,000; S&P 500 Taps 1,800

The Dow hit 16,000 for the first time ever to start Monday's trading and the S&P 500 pushed above 1,800. If the Dow closes higher today it will be the 39th record close this year.

So far this year, the Dow is up 22% and the S&P 500 is up 26%.

Since hitting the new records to open trading, both indexes have backed off slightly. The Dow last traded at 15,986 and the S&P 500 at 1,796.

The biggest percentage movers in the Dow year-to-date are: Boeing (NYSE: BA) +86%, Nike (NYSE: NKE) +53% and American Express (NYSE: AXP) +44%. The biggest laggards are: Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT) -6.5%, IBM (NYSE: IBM) -4% and AT&P (NYSE: T) +5%.

The biggest percentage movers in the S&P 500 year-to-date are: Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX) +272%, Best Buy (NYSE: BBY) +268%, and Micron (NYSE: MU) +212%. The biggest laggards are: J. C. Penney Company, Inc. (NYSE: JCP) -54%, Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE: NEM) -41% and Cliffs Natural Resources Inc. (NYSE: CLF) -29%.
