Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) CEO Steve Ballmer has taken a lot of knocks in his decade plus tenure... and he just might cave soon.
According to Windows8Update (that is a real website), word on the street is Ballmer will step down as head honcho following the launch of Windows 8, expected sometime next year.
The site nods to a tipster for the information, and iterates that this is only a rumor.
The source says Ballmer will step down regardless of whether Windows 8 is a success. It would be great for Ballmer to leave on top if Windows 8 shakes the world, but calls for his resignation will ring louder than ever if it flops.
Rumors suggest Windows President Steven Sinofsky will become the new CEO upon Ballmer's exit. However, Windows8Update says the success of Windows 8 may be a catalyst for this transition.
It should be noted that while the Windows8Update article was first posted on the site June 13th, the stock did not see a response until Business Insider highlighted it at about noon Thursday, at which time shares edged higher. Could investors be cheering the idea of a Ballmer-less Microsoft?
